BROCKTON – After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, the Rox came back in the nightcap on the strength of Geronimo Mendoza's pitching, to salvage a split with the Aces Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium in front of 2,805.

Mendoza went the distance – a scheduled seven innings – in recording the first complete game of the season for the Rox, shutting out the Aces, 9-0. Mendoza limited the Aces to three hits and three walks, while striking out six, to improve his record with the Rox to 1-2.

The Rox got all the scoring they would need in the first inning as Brian Jones's grand slam – his ninth home run of the season – scored Chad Stewart (2-for-4), Mike Torres (3-for-4, two runs scored), and Kris Zacuto (1-for-2, two runs) ahead of him. They added a run in the third as Torres scored on Jones's fielder's choice, giving the Rox a 5-0 lead.

The Rox added two more runs in the sixth as Jake Daubert (3-for-4, two runs, one RBI) and Junior Medina (1-for-3, one run) singled and Mike Sandoval's (2-for-4, three RBI) double brought them in, putting the Rox up, 8-0.

The Rox completed the scoring in the seventh when Zacuto and Jones singled and Daubert's double to left scored Zacuto.

The Rox lost the first game of tonight's doubleheader, 7-3.

Brian Buchanan (8-3) was charged with the loss, going three innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, two walks, and a hit batter, while striking out three. Matt Bennett pitched three innings of relief and gave up a run on two hits, while striking out one.

Marc Cerbone (2-1) picked up the win for the Aces, going six innings, allowing three runs on three hits, a walk and two hit batters, and striking out one.

Brian Jones had two of the Rox's three hits in game one, and went a combined 4-for-7, with five RBI and a run scored on the night.

The Rox (6-7, 33-26) and Aces (4-9, 13-46) face off in the finale of their four-game series Sunday at 5:05 p.m. Chris Keelin will take the mound for the Rox and be opposed by the Aces's Max Newill. Tickets are available for the game.
