Rowan helps Jackals rally past Spirit

Little Falls, NJ – A Chris Rowan three-run homerun in the top of the eighth, aided the Jackals in rallying past the North Shore Spirit, 11-9.

New Jersey scored in their first set of at-bats. An RBI single by Craig Conway, scored Zack Smithlin, giving the Jackals an early lead.

The Spirit answered in a big way, in the bottom half of the inning. Homeruns by Nelson Teilon, Travis Oglesby, and Brian Macchi, made it 6-1, North Shore.

The Jackals would rally back in the top of the second with three runs of their own. A two RBI double by Juan Infante, and an RBI single by Conway, brought the Jackals a significant amount closer.

Kevin Grijak's two out, RBI single, cut the Spirit lead to 6-5.

North Shore would cut the Jackals' rally short in the bottom of the fifth. Rob Fischer's homerun and an RBI single by Brian Macchi made it 8-5, in favor of the Spirit.

In the top of the eighth, New Jersey would rally back for five runs, against Spirit closer Ryan Bicondoa. Wilton Veras pushed two across with a bases loaded single. With two outs, Chris Rowan launched a three-run homerun deep into the night, putting the Jackals ahead 10-8.

They would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth, on a Juan Infante RBI single.

A Rob Fischer RBI single in the bottom of the ninth made things interesting, but Fabricio Benitez would work out of trouble, and close it out for the Jackals.

Gary Bell pitched five and two thirds innings for the Spirit, giving up seven hits, five runs, four of them earned, while striking out three. Ryan Bicondoa got the loss, giving up three runs in one and two thirds inning of work.

New Jersey starter Josh Miller pitched five innings, giving up six hits and four homeruns, leading to eight runs, with four of them earned. Craig Breslow pitched two innings of relief, striking out three, and earning the victory. Fabricio Benitez picked up his ninth save of the season, pitching the eighth and ninth innings.

For New Jersey, Wilton Veras was 3-5 with two RBI. Craig Conway also went 3-5 with two RBI, and a walk.

Rob Fischer was 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI, for the Spirit.

The Jackals complete their series with the North Shore Spirit on Sunday August 1, 2004. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

The team returns home on Thursday, August 5, 2004, when the New Haven County Cutters come to town for a three-game set. It's a Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark.
