Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA - 2B Melvin Falu homered twice and RF Jud Thigpen hit a three-run home run as the Rox pummeled Sussex 12-4 on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium. LHP Rolando Viera picked up his 22nd career victory in a Rox uniform, setting the team record.
Brockton took control of the game from the onset. Falu homered to left field on the game's fourth pitch and the offense didn't cool down until Brockton was in front 8-0. After Falu's home run, Sussex starter RHP Matt Salvato got the second out of the inning on a strikeout. The next two batters reached and Thigpen followed with his team-leading ninth home-run of the season, a towering shot to left field that gave the Rox a 4-0 lead.
The Rox batted around in the first inning so Falu was the second batter of the second inning as well. This time around, SS Dominic Ramos singled in front of him and Falu blasted his second home run in as many at-bats to left field to give the Rox a six-run cushion. Ramos followed suit an inning later with a two-run single of his own. Ramos, Falu, Thigpen and CF Eugene Julien each had at least two RBI on the night. Rox LF Dennis Abreu extended his hitting streak to a league-high 20 games with a double in the sixth inning.
Viera was strong throughout the start. He allowed three runs (two earned) on just two hits through seven innings. He walked two and struck out seven. RHP James Baker and RHP Ryan Williams pitched the eighth and ninth innings to close out the win for the Rox.
Brockton will look to take the series from Sussex on Sunday night when RHP Wayne Lundgren (4-2, 4.60 ERA) starts against Sussex RHP Kyle Ruwe (7-3, 4.36 ERA). Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
