Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Righty Junior Guerrero went the distance for the Tornadoes' league-leading 8th complete game of the season, but the Jackals continued their dominance over Worcester, defeating the Tornadoes, 5-3, at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday night.

The game began as an outstanding pitchers duel between Guerrero (4-4) and New Jersey righty Ted Serro (2-1). The game was scoreless into the bottom of the 6th inning, when the Jackals used six straight hits and a little bit of luck to take the lead. Rookie Tommy Murphy led off by hitting a seeing-eye single into leftfield and Casey Gordon dumped a soft single into rightfield. Zack Smithlin followed by beating out a sacrifice bunt attempt towards third base for an infield single, loading the bases. Matt Lauderdale then hit a looping flyball down the rightfield line that appeared to fall just foul, but was called fair by first base umpire Jim Grillo. The play went for a two-run double, putting the Jackals on top, 2-0. Luke Allen hit a routine flyball to shallow right, but Scott Grimes couldn't find the ball in the twilight and it fell in for another hit, plating Smithlin. Chris Kelly capped the scoring by lining an RBI single to leftfield, and it was 4-0, New Jersey.

With Serro out of the game in the top of the 7th, the Tornadoes went to work on side-wheeling righty Hunter Davis, first up out of the New Jersey bullpen. With one out, Chuck Jeroloman singled, Mike MacMillan drew a walk and Jeff LaHair singled to center, loading the bases. Jeroloman scored on a B.J. Weed sacrifice fly to leftfield, then after a wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third base, Omar Pena delivered them both with a clutch two-out soft single to rightfield that brought Worcester within one run at 4-3. But the Jackals touched up Guerrero for an insurance run in the 8th on two singles and two walks, the second of which came with the bases loaded. The Tornadoes could not manage another hit after their three-run 7th inning.

Serro (2-1) tossed 6 shutout innings for the Win and Guerrero (4-4) went all 8 innings but was the hard-luck loser. Rusty Tucker pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his third Save in as many days and his league-leading 14th Save of the season. Francisco Caraballo's 11-game hitting streak came to an end. The four-game losing streak matches the longest of the season for Worcester. The Tornadoes are now 1-9 on the season against the Jackals, with six of the nine losses coming by two runs or less. Worcester will try to salvage the series finale and snap their four-game skid on Sunday evening when they send lefty Tom Cochran to the mound against New Jersey righthander Tom Atlee. First pitch is set for 5:05pm.

The Tornadoes return home on Monday, July 21 for a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks. Monday will be Guaranteed Win Night and Salsa Night. Tuesday is New England Sports Night, while Wednesday is Park & Rec Day!
