Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC - After scoring a total of five points in the Checkers' two road victories last week, forward Brock McGinn has earned the CCM/AHL Player of the Week Award.

This marks the first such honor for McGinn, who now has 12 points in 12 AHL games this season. Despite playing in only half of Charlotte's games over the course of two NHL stints with the Carolina Hurricanes, McGinn ranks second on the team with nine goals, one behind Derek Ryan.

McGinn began his week by scoring a goal and assisting on Ryan's winner with 7.5 seconds left in regulation as the Checkers defeated San Antonio 3-2 on Wednesday. He followed that up with two goals, including the overtime winner, and an assist in the 5-4 victory over Texas on Friday.

McGinn was initially credited with his first professional hat trick on Friday, but a subsequent scoring change now credits his first goal to Ryan, with McGinn getting the primary helper.

A second-round draft choice in 2012, McGinn, 21, scored three points in his first 14 NHL games with the Hurricanes this season, including a goal in his first shift against Detroit on Oct. 16.

McGinn becomes the fourth Checker to earn an AHL Player of the Week Award over the course of the team's six AHL seasons. Others are Zach Boychuk (2010-11), Dan Ellis (2012-13) and John Muse (twice in 2013-14).
