Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (20-30, 48-70) defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (32-19, 62-57) by a 9-2 score in the second game of the five-game series at Blue Wahoos Stadium on Wednesday night.
Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher and Marlins No. 3 prospect Nick Neidert (11-6) earned his Southern League-leading 11th win of the season, working seven innings where he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Pensacola right-handed starting pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez (9-10) took the loss, working six innings where he allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
The first pitch of the game came in at 6:38 p.m. local time, and Miami Marlins center fielder Lewis Brinson pounded it over the left field wall, with his leadoff home run giving Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. It marked the first time that the Jumbo Shrimp have started a game with a leadoff home run on the road as Brinson played in the second game of his major league rehab assignment. The Wahoos took the lead in the bottom of the third when Chris Okey powered a two-run homer over the left field wall to put Pensacola ahead 2-1.
The Jumbo Shrimp started the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles by Justin Twine and Joe Dunand, and then on a grounder hit by Brian Schales just in front of home plate, a throwing error by Wahoos catcher Okey allowed both baserunners to score to put Jacksonville back in front 3-2.
Dunand then took center stage in the top of the sixth, hitting a two-run homer to grow Jacksonville's lead to 5-2. In the top of the seventh, Twine hit a two-run single to put the lead at 7-2, then Dunand homered again with a two-run shot to left to put the lead at 9-2, which would be the final. The game marked Dunand's first multi-homer game of his career, as he went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and three runs scored. The four hits for Dunand marked a career-high, while he matched a career-high with his four RBI.
Twine's hot hitting continued as he went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in as he extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 11 games. Brinson played six innings defensively in center field, going 1-for-3 at the plate in the second game of his rehab assignment from the Marlins.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Wahoos will continue their series with the third contest of the five-game set on Wednesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Robert Dugger (4-5, 4.93 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Pensacola right-handed pitcher Tony Santillan (6-10, 7.09 ERA). Fans can listen to Thursday's game on the Jumbo Shrimp Network presented by Community First, beginning at 7:20 p.m. eastern with the pregame show "Shrimp On Deck" locally on Sunny 102.3 FM, on the TuneIn Radio app, and www.jaxshrimp.com.
Jacksonville will return home to open a five-game series with the Birmingham Barons at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19. Gates open at 5 p.m. for Southpaw's Birthday, with local mascots on hand and a Pregame Candy Drop in the outfield presented by Jax Refrigeration. Families can play catch on the field, followed by player autographs on Baptist Health Sunday Family FUNday. Kids activities will be in the Wolfson Children's Hospital Kids Zone, and after the game, kids 12 and under can run the bases. The game is presented by Easy 102.9.
