Bridgeport Islanders News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers made it 10 straight games with a point but fell in a shootout to the Springfield Falcons 4-3 on Tuesday night at the MassMutual Center.
Bridgeport had three different leads, but Springfield tied the game each time, eventually winning the game in the skills competition.
The Sound Tigers caught a bad break just three minutes into the game, as Ryan Pulock blasted a shot on the power play that hit Andrew Rowe in front of the net. Rowe had to be helped off the ice and the Sound Tigers were forced to play with just 11 forwards for the rest of the game.
Mike Halmo got the scoring started 11 minutes into the game on a redirect in front of the net. After drawing the first power play of the game earlier in the game, Halmo tipped a shot by Scott Mayfield past Springfield netminder Marek Langhamer to put the Sound Tigers on top 1-0. James Wright earned the other assist on Halmo's 11 th goal of the season.
An uneventful second period that saw just 14 shots on net was followed by a frantic third that had goal after goal. Craig Cunningham got the scoring started just 1:04 into the third, firing a shot off the post and in for his 12th of the season. Dustin Jeffrey and Steven Delisle picked up the assists on the play.
Just over a minute and a half later, Bracken Kearns responded for the Sound Tigers. The play was all Ryan Pulock, as the defenseman carried the puck all the way through the offensive zone before dishing a pass in front to Kearns who went five-hole on Langhamer to put the Sound Tigers on top 2-1. It was Kearns' team-leading 19th goal of the season.
Eric Selleck tied the game up once again with 12 and a half minutes left in the third. On a scramble in front of the Sound Tigers net, Selleck backhanded a weak shot with Gibson getting back in position that skittered by the Bridgeport netminder and into the back of the net.
Halmo notched his second of the game with just six minutes remaining in regulation. After Alan Quine sent a shot off of Langhamer's pad, Halmo slapped home a rebound to put Bridgeport up 3-2. Quine's assist gave him 10 straight games with a point, recording three goals and nine assists over the span.
The Sound Tigers had a chance to make it a two-goal lead, as Kearns had a breakaway on Langhamer from the red line in. However, Langhamer stood tall and made the save, keeping it at a one-goal game.
Jordan Szwarz tied the game at 3-3 with just 2:51 remaining. Szwarz took a pass from Steve Downie and flipped it over Gibson to tie the game for the third time. The teams traded chances in regulation and overtime, but the game ultimately went to a shootout, where Alex Grant was the only player to score while all three Sound Tigers were stopped.
Gibson finished the game with 28 saves while the Sound Tigers power play went 0-for-4.
Bridgeport stays on the road for its next game, a 7:05 p.m. contest on Saturday night in Lehigh Valley against the Phantoms.
