Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Carolina Hurricanes today announced that they have recalled goaltender Daniel Altshuller from Charlotte. To fill the subsequent spot on their roster, the Checkers have recalled fellow netminder Anthony Peters from their ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades.
In a separate move, the Checkers also reassigned forward Carter Sandlak, who did not dress for any of three games since his Feb. 9 recall from the Everblades, back to Florida.
Altshuller, a 21-year-old rookie, makes his second trip Carolina, having served as backup for four NHL games in January without seeing game action. The 6-foot-4, 201-pound native of Nepean, Ontario, ranks tied for 14th in the AHL with a 2.55 goals-against average and is 17th with a .913 save percentage. Since making his AHL debut on Dec. 17, the Hurricanes' third-round draft choice (69th overall) in 2012 has appeared in 19 of a possible 22 games for Charlotte, posting a record of 9-6-4 and a Jan. 3 shutout in Ontario that marked the first by a Checkers' goaltender since April of 2014.
Peters, who is playing his first full professional season at age 25, earns his first recall to Charlotte since signing a two-way AHL/ECHL contract with the Checkers prior to this season. The 6-foot-1, 196-pound goaltender originally from Blyth, Ontario, is tied for second in the ECHL with 20 wins, ranks fourth with a 2.09 goals-against average and is tied for fifth with a .925 save percentage. He is the younger brother of former Checkers goaltender Justin Peters, who ranks third on the franchise's all-time wins list.
Peters becomes the third goaltender that the Checkers have brought in from Florida this season, joining Altshuller, the league's reining Goaltender of the Month at the time of his December recall, and Rasmus Tirronen, who is currently on the Everblades' roster but has not dressed for the team's last three games.
Sandlak, 22, has split this season between Charlotte and Florida, notching one assist in 10 AHL games with the Checkers and six points (2g, 4a) in 10 ECHL games with the Everblades.
The Checkers are on a six-game road swing that begins tonight in Milwaukee and continues with a stretch of three games in three nights starting Friday in Grand Rapids.
