Bridgeport, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (7-6-1-0) scored three times in the third period against the Lowell Lock Monsters (7-6-0-2) to cruise to a 5-1 victory at the Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday evening. It was the fifth straight win for Bridgeport.
Both teams were playing their third game in three days, and the first period started out tentative. But Lowell got into penalty trouble and the ice started to tilt in Bridgeport's favor. The Sound Tigers drew first blood in the 11th minute, with Matt Koalska burying a wrist shot from the right side of the slot. He beat G Vitaly Kolesnik for his fourth of the season and the 1-0 lead. The period ended with a 13-7 shot lead for the home squad.
Lowell was given a perfect chance to tie the score near the midway point of the second when they went on a five-minute power play after a high-sticking call. But G Wade Dubielwicz stood strong between the Sound Tigers pipes and kept the Monsters out. Near the end of the man advantage, Lowell's Brad Richardson got twisted up at the right point and fell to the ice injured, leaving Rob Collins to race in alone on Kolesnik, who snapped home his sixth of the season, shorthanded to make it 2-0. It was the third shorthanded goal of the season allowed by Lowell.
Bridgeport made it 3-0 early in the third period. A rebound off Kolesnik's blocker appeared to bounce off Wyatt Smith and into the net to put the Sound Tigers in control. Former Lock Monster Allan Rourke and Evgeny Tunik later scored less than three minutes apart to make it 5-0 Bridgeport. The Monsters finally solved Dubielewicz, with a late power play goal by Vince Bellissimo, who recorded his fourth tally of the season. Andrew Ladd extended his point streak to three games by assisting on the goal.
It was the worst loss of the season for Lowell, who had not trailed by more than three goals in any game all season. And when Keith Aucoin left the game in the third after taking a puck to the face, he amounted to the seventh player lost from Lowell's lineup in the last three days - four to injury and three to recall to the NHL.
The Lock Monsters return home on Wednesday, November 16th against the Albany River Rats. No Lowell player registered three goals in Saturday's Guaranteed Hat Trick game against Hartford (which they won 5-4), so everyone in attendance received a voucher good for complimentary admission to Wednesday's game against the Rats. That game is set for a 7:05 p.m. face off at Tsongas Arena.
Individual tickets are on sale now at the Tsongas Arena box office, which is open from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Full season, 20-game, mini-plans and Flex Packs are now on sale as well; contact the Lock Monsters ticket office at (978) 458-PUCK (7825) for remaining seat availability.
All Lock Monsters games can be heard live on 980 AM WCAP with the Voice of the Monsters Ryan Johnston and Eric Lindquist providing color. Live video streaming is also available through the official broadband provider of the AHL, B2 Networks. Click on the B2 link on www.lockmonsters.com to watch the game from your own home.
