Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers got off to a fast start on Saturday evening with a booming home run by K.C. Hobson in the first inning, but a tattered pitching staff and injury-riddled lineup could not hold on as the Bridgeport Bluefish picked up a 10-2 victory in the middle game of a three-game series Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Hobson's homer, his third of the series and 17th of the season came off Matthew Spann (2-0) with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Lancaster would manage only four additional hits and an unearned run over the remainder of the night as shortstop Luis Hernandez made three stellar stops up the middle, and third baseman Angelys Nina took a double away from Trayvon Robinson.
Hito Fujie made the spot start for Lancaster and allowed only a second inning home run to Nina over his three innings of work.
Bridgeport tested new right-hander Ben Ancheff (0-1) with bunts in the top of the fourth, and both Welington Dotel and Sean Burroughs reached safely to get the inning underway. Dotel stole third, and Jose Gil walked to load the bases. Nina was hit by a pitch to force home one run, and a second scored when Luis Rodriguez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.
The Bluefish put the game away against R.J. Hively in the sixth and seventh innings. Dotel doubled, the third of his five hits, to open the sixth and moved up on a scratch hit along the third base line by Burroughs. Gil bounced back to the hill for the first out, bringing up Nina. The right-handed batter lofted a fly ball toward the scoreboard in right field. Chase Patterson backed up and appeared to have a play, but the ball fell in as two runs scored. Nina was gunned down at the plate by Patterson on a single by Luis Rodriguez, but the Bluefish added one more on a double to right center by Josh Vitters.
Five straight hits by the Bluefish added four more runs in the top of the seventh to ice the game.
Meanwhile, Lancaster center fielder Caleb Gindl failed to extend his hitting streak to a club record 21st game. Gindl grounded to short three times and flied out to left field on the night.
Jonny Drozd pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for Lancaster, allowing only one hit and striking out three.
The series concludes on Sunday afternoon. Joe Gardner (0-0) will make the start for Lancaster against right-hander David Kubiak (6-3). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel beginning at 1:45.
