Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Lucas Brenton is blessed with size, standing in at six-foot-four and almost 200 pounds.

The Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman knew to continue to progress heading into his second season in the Western Hockey League, he needed to focus on his skating coming into the 2021-22 season.

"I feel like mobility is a huge part [of my game], I feel like for a big guy, I can move pretty well and it really helps out my game," Brenton said after practice on Monday.

"A lot of times you see six-four guys, six-five guys who are pretty slow and I feel like I've got pretty good speed, pretty good agility for my size."

Brenton's mobility has helped him put together a strong start to his season. With one goal and four points through 10 games, Brenton has already surpassed his point total from last season in 13 fewer games.

"I feel like this year my confidence is way up there," Brenton said. "It's getting in every game, as you can see out there, I'm rushing with the puck and loving it."

After being selected in the sixth round of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, Brenton made his debut with Moose Jaw in the 2019-20 season, playing in nine games.

The Winnipeg product joined the Warriors last season in the Subway WHL Hub and posted one goal, three points and a plus-four rating in 23 games.

"That opportunity really helped with my development, just getting on the ice with the Warriors, getting some games, getting to know the guys, so it was a really good opportunity to get comfortable around the team and organization," Brenton said.

Brenton said playing in the Hub allowed him to adjust to the speed of the WHL and what it takes to play at a high level in the league.

"The schedule was the biggest challenge," he said. "Just having to always have your mind on hockey, come to the rink every single day and play hockey, it's basically your job, so you've got to have the mindset to come in here, work your hardest."

Brenton has been a solid contributor on the Warriors' backend so far this season, including taking on a larger role with captain Daemon Hunt out for the past three games due to a suspension and Cole Jordan missing time due to an illness.

"As the season goes on, I definitely want to get even more stellar defensively and become one of the main guys they can look for to shutdown the other team's star players," he said.

While he's put together some strong offensive numbers so far this season, Brenton said he knows the bread-and-butter of his game is in the defensive end.

"I'm a big defensive, defenceman who also jumps up in the play and can help out on the offensive side, but my main focus is the defensive end and keeping it shutdown," he said.

The Warriors have a 4-6-0-0 record entering this week, which will see the team play three road games in four nights.

Brenton said the team continues to grow and get better each day at practice.

"Our biggest strength is our effort, compete and our teamwork," he said. "I feel like even if the bounces aren't going our way, even if we're having a tough night, all the boys are bringing it every single night and have the heart."

Brenton and the Warriors open their three-game road trip on Wednesday night in Regina and then head to Lethbridge on Friday and Medicine Hat on Saturday.
