Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 13, 2013) -- Brandon Brennan opened with six scoreless innings, and the Kannapolis Intimidators survived a ninth inning scare to beat the Rome Braves, 4-3, on Thursday night at CMC- NorthEast Stadium. Brennan, the White Sox fourth round pick in last June's draft, kept Braves hitters off-balance while keeping all but three balls in the infield through the first six frames.
The Intimidators led 4-0 before Rome chipped away, entering the ninth inning down 4-2. Tony Bucciferro got into trouble, giving up a pair of hits to put runners on the corners with one out before throwing a wild pitch that pulled the Braves within one. Rome's Joey Meneses stood on third base with two outs before Levi Hyams grounded out to second base to end the game.
Brennan (3-9) gave up a double to Jose Peraza to open the first inning but held the Braves' next 23 batters hitless. He worked 1-2-3 fifth and sixth innings before Rome was able to dirty up his line in the seventh.
Brennan gave up a leadoff walk to Trenton Moses, but induced a double play ground ball from the next batter to erase the base runner. Eric Garcia followed with an infield single with two outs in the seventh, the first hit for Rome since the first batter of the game. Ronald Luna and Meneses followed with base hits, the latter ending his shutout bid and his night. Brennan finished his night allowing a run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts, one shy of his season high, over 6 2/3 innings.
Todd Kibby stranded two runners, retiring the final batter of the seventh. Bucciferro earned the save (1) in his first relief appearance of the season.
The Intimidators struck for two runs in the second inning. Yoandy Barroso led off with a double and scored on an Eric Grabe triple to right field, Grabe's second triple of the season. He later scored on a Jeremy Dowdy groundout for a 2-0 edge.
Kannapolis added a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Jason Coats doubled to right field and moved to third on a Michael Marjama base hit. Two batters later, Patrick Palmeiro doubled home Coats, and Marjama scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
Marjama finished 3-for-4 while Palmeiro went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Leadoff man Micah Johnson drew a first inning walk and stole second and third base, upping his Minor League-leading cache to 52 stolen bases. It was the 10th time this season Johnson has stolen two bases in one trip around the diamond.
The Intimidators continue this series against the Braves on Friday at 7:05 p.m. with Gem Theatre movie tickets being given to the first 500 fans. The Intimidators are also giving away Lionel matchbox cars to the first 250 kids courtesy of Lionel.
