Braves win fourth straight

The Mississippi Braves downed the Huntsville Stars 10-1, in front of 2,617 fans at Trustmark Park. The Braves recorded their season-high fourth win in a row with good pitching and tons of hits.

Mississippi got on the board in the second inning when Brian McCann and Wes Timmons had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. McCann later scored on a single by pitcher Anthony Lerew and Timmons scored on a single by Onil Joseph. On Joseph's single to short, Anthony Lerew came around to score after shortstop Enrique Cruz threw the ball away making the score 3-0.

The Braves added two more runs in the third when McCann led off with a double and scored when Timmons followed him with a double. Timmons then came around to score on a single by Luis Hernandez making the score 5-0.

Huntsville got on the board in the fourth when first baseman Brandon Gemoll hit an opposite field homer into the Alltel Corporate Picnic Pavilion in left field.

Mississippi broke the game open in the sixth when Hernandez led off with a single and Lerew attempted to sacrifice him over. Reliever Khalid Ballouli sailed the throw to first over the head of Gemoll allowing Hernandez to move to third and Lerew to second. Joseph then hit a single that plated both runners giving the Braves a 7-1 lead. Joseph scored on a single by Scott Thorman, and Thorman then scored on a double by Timmons making the score 9-1.

Hernandez doubled to lead off the seventh and came around to score on a single by Joseph giving the Braves a 10-1 lead.

Starter Anthony Lerew (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) improved his record to 4-2 on the year. Casey DeHart and Glenn Tucker combined to throw three shutout innings of relief. For Huntsville, Dennis Sarfate (4.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) falls to 4-3 on the year.

The Braves and Stars will play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. On the hill for the Braves will be LHP Mike Porzio (0-2, 8.10) while Huntsville will counter Manny Parra (2-3).

BRAVES BITES:

1B Scott Thorman extended his hitting streak to a team-high 15 consecutive games (22-62, .355).

The Braves won their fourth consecutive game setting the season high for the longest winning streak.

Anthony Lerew joined Matt Wright and Matt Coenen as the only pitchers on the Braves' staff with two consecutive wins.

Mississippi pounded out a season high 15 hits in the game.

The Braves are now 18-10 when they score first . . . 19-10 when they score four or more runs . . . 7-9 in the first game of a series . . . 9-13 at home . . . 6-6 at home in May . . . and 18-11 overall in May.
