Mississippi Braves News Release
Mobile, AL - The Mississippi Braves continued their dominance of the Mobile BayBears on Thursday night, winning the series opener 6-2 at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The Braves (28-18) have won 8 of 11 against the BayBears (23-23) in 2013, including five of six in Mobile.
Mississippi started the scoring with three runs in the fourth inning, all with two outs. The Braves rattled off five straight hits beginning with an Edward Salcedo single. He was caught stealing, but Jose Martinez singled behind him and Dan Brewer doubled to put men on second and third.
Luis Nunez broke the scoreless tie with a two-run single through the left side. Barrett Kleinknecht then scored Nunez on a single of his own, staking the Braves to a 3-0 lead.
That's all starter Cody Martin needed to get the win.
Martin (2-2) pitched six brilliant innings for the win, allowing just six hits and one run, a solo home run by Keon Broxton in the fifth. Andrew Chafin (1-3) suffered the loss for Mobile, allowing five earned runs on ten hits in six innings.
Erik Hamren earned his first save of the season, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings.
Broxton finished the day 3-for-4, stroking two doubles in addition to the home run.
The Braves picked up another run in the fifth, loading the bases with nobody out. Phil Gosselin scored from third on a double play and put the Braves up 4-0.
An inning later, Mississippi posted two more unearned runs on RBI singles by Kleinknecht and Gosselin.
Mobile threatened in the ninth, scoring a run on a Justin Greene RBI single, but Hamren struck out Nick Evans to strand men on second and third and end the game.
With the Jacksonville Suns' win over the Birmingham Barons, the Braves remain in first place in the South division by a 1/2 game.
Mississippi will face Mobile in game two of the five-game series on Friday night at 7:05 PM CT. Right-hander Michael Lee (3-2, 3.45) takes on right-handed Archie Bradley (3-0, 0.90). Listen live to Kyle Tait on the call beginning at 6:30 with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
