Worcester Bravehearts News Release
TORRINGTON, Conn. - In arguably the most important game of the season, the Worcester Bravehearts answered the call, as they flattened the Torrington Titans 11-1 on Thursday night, Aug. 6 at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, Connecticut.
The Bravehearts took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning thanks, in part, to a solo home run by first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn). Worcester then ignited for seven runs in the 4th inning thanks to some of its biggest sluggers.
Leading 5-0, designated hitter Alex Sanchez smacked a grand slam to blow the game wide open. Before Sanchez's home run, shortstop Gavin Tristan (Lamar / Richmond, Texas) hit a 2RBI single followed by an RBI double from center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale).
All nine runs came off Torrington starter Robbie Hitt (Quinnipiac / Suffield, Connecticut) who took the loss with all nine runs earned on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Sanchez wasn't finished, as he stepped back up in the 6th inning and hit a 2-run homer to put the Bravehearts ahead 11-0. Sanchez finished 2-4 with two runs scored and six RBI, and Tower finished 3-3 with two runs scored. Worcester collected 11 hits in the winning effort.
Worcester starter Dylan Collett (Saint Leo / Altamont, New York) worked swiftly as well, as he got the win after going six scoreless innings and allowing just five hits while striking out three.
In other action around the league, the North Shore Navigators defeated the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs 4-3, and the Pittsfield Suns dropped Game 1 of a doubleheader with the Bristol Blues by a score of 7-1. Game 2 is still in progress. With the win Worcester sits one game behind both Wachusett and Pittsfield, and if Pittsfield loses, the Bravehearts will be .5 game back of the Suns.
The Worcester Bravehearts will play the second half of a home-and-home with the Torrington Titans at 7:05 p.m. Friday night, Aug. 7 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester. Friday is Fan Appreciation Night, which will feature a glow-in-the-dark cap giveaway and post- game fireworks presented by National Grid.
Bravehearts tickets can be purchased at the Hanover Insurance Park box office, online at www.worcesterbravehearts.com or by calling 508-478-3007.
