Worcester Bravehearts News Release
NASHUA, N.H. - For the third time this season, the Worcester Bravehearts and Nashua Silver Knights proved that anything can happen and that no lead is completely safe.
Fortunately for Worcester, each game against Nashua has resulted in a win, as the Bravehearts held off a late rally by the Silver Knights in the ninth inning to clinch a 7 - 6 win June 19 at Holman Stadium in Nashua, N.H.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Bravehearts scored multiple first-inning runs to take an early lead. Worcester infielder Nick Nunziato led the offense going 2-5 at the plate with three RBIs. In the first inning, he hit a single to score outfielders Ian Strom and Brendan O'Reilly. Nunziato then took Nashua starter Mike Geannelis deep for his fourth home run of the season. Geannelis took the loss, which dropped his record to 1 - 1 this season.
Holy Cross junior and Worcester first baseman Shane Sandoval hit a home run of his own - a two-run shot in the third to cap off a four-run inning for the Bravehearts and giving the team a 6 - 1 lead.
Bravehearts starter Andrew Bergmann improved to 1 - 1 this season with the win in five innings pitched. Bergmann allowed four runs on seven hits but got enough run support to clinch the win. Bergmann got the first two outs in the fifth inning but allowed a three-run home run to Nashua first baseman Joe Napolitano to make it a 6 - 4 ball game. However, Bravehearts pitcher Justin Versteeg was lights out in relief, as he threw three scoreless innings with only one hit allowed.
Worcester scored a key insurance run to take a 7 - 4 lead into the final inning, as reliever Charlie Butler struggled to close the game. Despite striking out two Silver Knights in the ninth, Butler gave up a two-run home run to Silver Knights left fielder Matt Sanchez to make it a one-run game. However, Butler got the third out to record his third save of the season.s
The 11 - 3 Bravehearts will put their four-game winning streak to the test in their first game of the season against the Martha's Vineyard Sharks at 7 p.m. June 20 in Oaks Bluffs, Mass.
