NORFOLK, VA- Brandon Segal scored four times on Saturday night to lead the Norfolk Admirals to a 7-1 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phantoms. It was the Phantoms second straight exhibition loss to the Ads and brought the Philly preseason record to 3-2.
The Ads put up the first mark of the game on their nifty new scoreboard, making good at 10:22 of the opening period on the power play. A 40-footer off the stick of Paul Szczechura beat a screened Michael Teslak.
Norfolk closed out the scoring in the first with another power play goal. Segal picked up his first when he slapped the puck through the five-hole of Teslak at 14:54.
The Admirals took advantage of a 5-on-3 to expand their lead to 3-0. Szczechura ripped a close range wrister into the Philly cage at 5:48 of the second. Just 26 seconds later, Segal potted his second goal of the game while the teams skated four aside.
Jonathon Kalinski briefly gave the Phantoms some life, notching a power play goal on a cross-ice pass from fellow Phantom freshman Claude Giroux at 7:06. But the feeling didn't last, as Segal completed his hat trick four minutes later, calling his own number as he trekked into the zone on a 2-on-1.
Another two-man advantage lifted the score to 6-1. This time, Chris Lawrence victimized Teslak on a broken play and mercifully closed out the second.
Jeremy Duchesne relieved Teslak to start the third and was rudely greeted by Segal, whose fourth of the night made it 7-1 at 2:55. That ended the scoring and gave the Admirals a 4-for-10 night on the power play, while the Phantoms went 1-8.
Teslak ended the night with 22 saves and Duchesne had four. Mike McKenna went the distance for the Admirals and held the fort on 31 of 32 Philadelphia efforts.
The Phantoms return to Philadelphia to take on their parent club, the Philadelphia Flyers, on October 7 at the Wachovia Spectrum at 7:30 PM in the final preseason tuneup for both teams.
