Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - Justin Kinnunen had two goals and the Texas Brahmas scored three times on the powerplay to defeat the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 5-1 on Saturday night at CenturyTel Center. Texas has now won four consecutive games against the Mudbugs, who lost at home for the first time in five games.

Dale Lupul tallied Bossier-Shreveport's lone goal of the night as the Mudbugs were within one with 12 minutes remaining before Texas salted away the victory with three straight goals to end the game. The loss drops Bossier-Shreveport to 10-5-2 on the season.

Grant Jacobsen made the play that set up Justin Kinnunen's shorthanded goal, which opened the scoring for Texas at 6:29 of the first period. Despite a 16-12 shot advantage, the Mudbugs trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Kinnunen did it again in the second period to put the Brahmas up 2-0, this time on a 5 on 3 powerplay with just over five minutes left in the period. The second frame would end with a 2-0 advantage for Texas.

Lupul's goal came on the powerplay at 8:33 of the third after Brett Smith won an offensive zone faceoff back to set Lupul up for a wrist shot. A short time later though, the Brahmas regained the two-goal advantage when Marc Belanger stole a puck in the Mudbugs zone and beat Ken Carroll on a breakaway to make it 3-1. Scott Sheppard scored another powerplay goal three minutes later to push the lead to 4-1 before Greg McConnell's redirection on the powerplay capped off the scoring in a 5-1 Texas win.

Carroll stopped 29 Brahmas' shots on the evening and Brett Jaeger made 37 saves to move to 3-0 against the Bugs this season. Bossier-Shreveport actually finished the game with a 38-34 shot advantage. The Mudbugs converted 1 of 8 powerplay chances while Texas went 3 for 11.

Up next for the Mudbugs is the team's second three-in-three of the season, which begins next Thursday night at CenturyTel Center. The Mudbugs will take on the Wichita Thunder at 7:05 pm on Thursday before traveling back to Texas to play the Brahmas again on Friday. Then Bossier-Shreveport will make its first trip of the season to the Kansas Coliseum to play the Thunder again on Saturday in a homecoming game of sorts for former Wichita players Travis Clayton, Joe Blaznek, Jon Horrell and Todd Paul. Before that though, join us Monday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at Boomtown Hotel & Casino for "Powerplay with Scott Muscutt", the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Coaches Show." If you can't make it to Boomtown to see the show in person, it will be broadcast live on AM 1130 KWKH.
