Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - In the second of two weekend meetings between the two clubs, the Arizona Sundogs and Laredo Bucks faced one and other Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. The Sundogs fell behind 5-0 through two-and-a-half periods of play before converting for two late goals to avoid being shutout for just the third time in franchise history. Adam Perry increased his consecutive goal scoring streak to six games with the game's final tally.
Laredo jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first 20 minutes of play Saturday night despite being outshot 11-9 in the period. The visiting Bucks capitalized on an early Sundogs turnover resulting in a 2-on-1 break. Ryan Salvis blocked a pass attempt at his own blue line, sending the puck to Bobby Russel streaking down the near half boards. Russell sent a centering feed to a trailing Agarunov who beat Joel Gistedt with a forehand shot for his fourth of the year just 44 seconds into the contest. While on the power play, Serge Dube staked his club to a 2-0 lead at the 11:34 mark, pinching backdoor from his point position. Jeff Bes collected a Darryl Smith below the goal line before sending a through pass to Dube on the far post for his league-leading 24th assist of the year. Bes recorded his second helper of the period with less than two minutes to play in the opening frame to help his club to a three-goal lead. Leaving the box as his interference penalty expired, forward Joey Olson gathered an outlet pass from Bes and skated in alone on Gistedt before converting with a low wrist shot with 1:34 remaining in the period.
The Bucks opened a four-goal cushion six minutes into the second period as Devin Featherstone converted for his club's second power play goal of the game from Jason Dixon and Alex Goupil. Frustrations erupted between the two clubs following the Featherstone tally as a total of 46 minutes in penalties were handed out in a 37-second span. Karl Sellan and Steve Weidlich came together before exchanging blows to the right of Bucks goaltender Ryan Gibb at the period's 8:37 mark. At the next whistle, Kyle Hood and Bes received unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and Rick Kozak and Matt Suderman traded punches before being sent off the ice with game misconducts. Arizona showed spurts of energy in the middle frame, controlling the play in the Laredo zone. The Bucks held a 13-10 advantage in shots in the period.
Laredo pushed the score to 5-0 at the 11:50 mark of the third period as Darryl Smith worked hard behind the Arizona net and circled to the front before sending a shot past Gistedt for his second point of the game. Erick Lizon collected an assist along with Bes, his third of the game. Arizona finally ended Gibb's shutout bid with 4:34 to play and avoided being shutout for just the third time in franchise history as Mark Kolanos pushed a rebound past Gibb while on the power play. Karl Sellan and Jon Landry tallied assists on the Kolanos effort. The Sundogs' Perry increased his consecutive goal scoring streak to six games 33 seconds later on a centering feed from linemate Cory Stillman to pull Arizona within three and close out scoring. Arizona doubled-up Laredo in shots 12-6 in the final period.
Joel Gistedt appeared in net for Arizona and turned aside 23 of 28 shots in the loss while Ryan Gibb won for the second-straight night, holding Arizona scoreless through 55 minutes of play and blocking 31 of 33 shots. The Sundogs finished 1-for-7 with the man advantage Saturday night while the Bucks converted on 2-of-4 power play chances. With the loss, Arizona falls 8-10-1 on the year and remains in second place in the Southwest Division, two points ahead of third place New Mexico and seven points back of division leader Odessa.
Arizona now heads on the road for two weeks for seven-straight away from home before returning to Tim's Toyota Center on Wednesday, Dec. 17. The Sundogs next take on the Odessa Jackalopes at the Ector County Coliseum in Odessa, Texas on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6:05pm (Arizona time). The can be heard via tape delay beginning at 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
