Gorillas Deny Rage a Sweep, Win 3-2

Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Broomfield, Colo. - Sam Ftorek scored twice in the third period and goaltender Mike Gorman stopped 37 of 39 on the evening to help lead the Amarillo Gorillas to a 3-2 win over the Rocky Mountain Rage at Broomfield Event Center. The teams split a home-and-home set this Thanksgiving weekend after the Rage were victorious on Amarillo's home ice last night, 5-4.

For the second straight game Rocky Mountain bolted out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Last night Colt King scored 21 seconds into the contest and tonight his linemate Brent Cullaton did the honors, potting his first goal of the year at 1:04. The Gorillas squared the contest late in the frame on the power play. Former Rage winger John Snowden spotted Nate Hagemo sneaking down from his defensive position through the right circle, and the rookie wristed home his first career goal at 18:51.

Rocky Mountain forged back in front at 6:05 of the second. Scott Wray streaked up the left wing and sent a perfect pass to the far post right onto the tape of Pat Sutton, who had an easy finish for his second goal of the campaign. The Rage took their 2-1 lead to the third, but it would be the last time they solved Gorman.

Similar to last night when Amarillo scored an early goal in the third period to deadlock the game, the Gorillas again drew even when Stuart MacRae fed Ftorek, who beat Rocky Mountain netminder Marty Magers high to the glove side with a wrist shot from between the circles at 3:29. Mid-way through the period Magers made a spectacular stop on Jason Weitzel to keep the game tied at two, but only momentarily. Weitzel fished the puck out of the ensuing scramble and set-up Ftorek stationed through the left circle. This time the Amarillo captain's wrister was fired just under the bar over Magers' right shoulder for the eventual game-winner at 9:50.

The Rage had plenty of opportunities to tie the game over the final half of the third, including two chances on the power play, but it was Gorman's turn to take center stage as he slammed the door shut by stopping all 17 shots he saw in the final period to seal the 3-2 victory.

The loss not only kept Rocky Mountain from sweeping the home-and-home from the Gorillas, but it also prevented the club from winning back-to-back home games for the first time this year. The Rage are now 5-10-1 this season and in fourth place in the Northwest Division with 11 points.

Rocky Mountain next makes its first trip of the season to Rapid City for a tilt against the Rush on Dec. 3 before visiting the Colorado Eagles on Dec. 6. The club then returns home for a two-game set with the Arizona Sundogs on Dec. 10 and 12 at Broomfield Event Center.

Individual tickets for the games against the Sundogs are available for as low as $5 for kids 12 and under (with the purchase of at least one adult ticket) and cost just $10 for students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased at the BEC Box Office, www.Ticketmaster.com, charge-by-phone at (303) 830-TIXS, and all Ticketmaster retail outlets.
