Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
FORT WORTH, Texas (January 14) - The Fort Worth Brahmas (20-13-4) earned six of eight possible points last week, going 3-1-0 in the team's four games. The weekend's three-game sweep included two wins over the first-place Allen Americans and a 6-2 rout of the Tulsa Oilers. The Brahmas hit the road this week for two games in the Midwest. Fort Worth will visit the Quad City Mallards Friday, January 18 and the Bloomington Blaze Saturday, January 19.
At this point in the season - what would have been the all-star break - the Brahmas stand in sole possession of third place in the Central Hockey League, only one point behind the second-place Wichita Thunder.
LOOKING BACK:
Tuesday, January 8 vs. Allen Americans:
The Brahmas hosted the Allen Americans Tuesday, January 8 at the NYTEX Sports Centre for the first of three consecutive meetings between the two cross-town rivals. Allen held a three-goal lead in the third period and held on late for the 4-3 win despite two third-period scores from Fort Worth winger John Snowden.
Friday, January 11 @ Allen Americans:
The Brahmas then traveled across the Metroplex to visit the Americans Friday, January 11 at the Allen Event Center. In a reversal of Tuesday's result, Fort Worth opened a three-goal third-period lead and held on late for a 4-3 victory on the road. Chad Woollard scored two goals, Snowden added another, and Jake Morley's first score of the season proved to be the game-winner.
Saturday, January 12 vs. Allen Americans:
After two consecutive physical games, Saturday's proverbial rubber match between the Brahmas and Americans was even more physical and ended in dramatic fashion. Allen held a 2-1 edge in the third period when two fights broke out simultaneously. The Brahmas' Daniel Barnes received a five-minute major for fighting, but Allen's duo of Alex Penner and Darryl Bootland each received 10-minute misconduct penalties (in addition to other infractions) that ended their nights and sent them to the locker room early.
The slew of Allen penalties resulted in a Fort Worth 5-on-3 powerplay, which the Brahmas capitalized on quickly. Snowden found the back of the net, beating Americans netminder Steve Silverthorn off of a feed from Sy Nutkevitch. On the goal, Allen defenseman Tyler Ludwig was assessed a high-sticking minor, giving the Brahmas yet another two-man advantage. Snowden delivered again on an almost identical score. Nutkevitch fed Snowden at the left faceoff circle and the 10-year veteran fired a one-timer slapshot past Silverthorn for the second time in just over a minute.
Allen sent the contest into overtime as Kale Kerbashian scored the equalizer, his second of the game, in his first professional appearance.
Just under three minutes into overtime, Greg Eskedjian - signed just a day earlier - fired a wrister from the slot by Silverthorn for the game-winner. For Eskedjian, who was a member of the Brahmas' squad last season and returned from playing in the Netherlands earlier in the week, it was his first score of the season.
Sunday, January 13 @ Tulsa Oilers:
An offensive explosion in the third period of Sunday's game at Tulsa sealed the deal for the Brahmas. A tight 2-2 game in the second period, John Snowden beat Oilers netminder Shane Madolora at the 17:42 mark with a one-timer from the slot off of a set-up from Chad Woollard. Snowden's goal opened the floodgates, as the Brahmas scored three more unanswered goals in the third period to run away with the contest by the score of 6-2. Snowden added another, his ninth goal in the last five games, while Adam Hogg and Calin Wild also found the back of the net in the final period.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Brahmas have two road games this week, as the team travels north to take on the Quad City Mallards and the Bloomington Blaze Friday, January 18 and Saturday, January 19, respectively. Bloomington is the one team the Brahmas have not played yet this season. Fort Worth is 2-0-0 against the Quad City Mallards in 2012-2013.
