Bowie Flattens Squirrels in Finale, 12-4

RICHMOND, VA - The Bowie Baysox (36-33) pounded out 12 runs on 14 hits as they drubbed the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 12-4, in the finale of a three-game series in front of 6,426 at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Baysox the series, and improved their season mark over the Squirrels to 12-6.
Squirrels' starter Ryan Verdugo thwarted a first-inning threat from the Baysox, but wasn't as fortunate in the second. Bowie racked up four runs on four hits to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Verdugo started his own trouble with a one-out walk issued Ronnie Welty. Pedro Florimon followed and cracked an RBI triple off the wall in left-center field. Carlos Rojas then plated Florimon with an RBI single to left field for a 2-0 lead. Xavier Avery singled to put two aboard before L.J. Hoes cracked a two-run double down the left-field line for a 4-0 lead.
Verdugo's command eluded him in the third, leading to his departure from the ballgame. He walked Brandon Waring to start the inning, hit Steve Lerud with a pitch, and ultimately loaded the bases with nobody out with a walk to Welty. Verdugo was lifted after the walk to Welty in favor of left--hander Wilmin Rodriguez. His first pitch was wild to the backstop, allowing Waring to stroll in from third base for a 5-0 lead. Florimon then lifted a sacrifice-fly to right field to bring in Lerud for a 6-0 advantage. A batter later, Xavier Avery singled into left field to cap the inning with the Baysox in front, 7-0.
In the shortest out of the season for a Squirrels' starting pitcher, Verdugo (4-3) endured the loss over two-plus innings. He was touched up for seven earned runs on six hits. He walked three, hit another and struck out one as he took his third loss of the season.
Rodriguez turned in a pair of scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, but the Baysox put the game away with a pair of unearned runs against him in the sixth inning. Avery singled to start the inning, and Greg Miclat singled behind him. An error charged to Chris Dominguez allowed the Baysox to load the bases before Robbie Widlansky made it 8-0 with an RBI single. Waring grounded into a double-play, but a ninth run scored for Bowie on the play, as the lead stood at 9-0.
Meanwhile, Baysox right-hander Tim Bascom was cruising. He held the Squirrels hitless through four innings before Justin Christian singled to start the fifth inning. Bascom shrugged off the hit, and kept the Squirrels at bay on one hit through five innings.
Bascom finally hit a wall in the sixth, and the Squirrels took advantage to crack the scoreboard for the first time. The inning was highlighted by a three-run bases-clearing triple from Wes Hodges. Chris Dominguez also received an RBI in the inning, as he walked with the bases loaded. Following the frame, the Squirrels trailed 9-4.
However, Bascom (3-1) had done more than enough to earn the victory, his third of the season. He was charged with three runs - one earned - over 5 1/3 innings. He surrendered just two hits, walked three and struck out two.
The Baysox rubbed some salt in the wound for the Squirrels as they added a run in the seventh inning, and capped their scoring with two final runs in the ninth inning. The 12 runs scored marked a season-worst for the Flying Squirrels' pitching staff.
The Squirrels will enjoy an off-day on Monday before opening a three-game series in Harrisburg, PA, against the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM at Metro Bank Park. The Squirrels will send RHP Henry Sosa (2-0, 0.00) in the opener against RHP Shairon Martis (4-2, 3.30).
