Irwin Makes Splash in Debut as Curve Notch Win

June 19, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE, Pa. - Phil Irwin impressed in his Double-A debut as he did not allow a run in six innings to help catapult the Curve to a, 4-1, win over the Harrisburg Senators in front of the second-largest home crowd of the season at BCB on Sunday night. Irwin sprinkled a pair of hits over his six innings and struck out two in the win.

Altoona gave Irwin his first run of support in the second inning when Anthony Norman drove in Quincy Latimore with an RBI single through the left side. It would again be the combination of Latimore and Norman in the fourth that helped Altoona run its advantage to 2-0. With two down in the fourth, Latimore drew a walk off Senators starter Erik Arnesen (3-1) and came around on Norman's single to right plus a throwing error by right fielder Bill Rhinehart.

The two runs would be more than enough for Irwin, who didn't allow his first hit until there were two men out in the fifth. He hit the second batter of the game, Archie Gilbert, but then did not allow another baserunner until the two-out single by Alex Valdez in the fifth. All told, it was a run of 13 in a row set down by the Germantown, Tenn. native.

Latimore, who finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored, slugged his seventh home run of the year to lead off the seventh inning and it made it a 3-0 game in favor of Altoona. Harrisburg scored its only run of the night off reliever Bryan Morris as they plated an unearned run off the Curve righty in the eighth.

The Curve answered with an RBI single by Tony Sanchez in the bottom of the eighth to regain the three-run advantage. Morris completed the final three innings for his third save of the season.

Latimore and Norman combined for four of Altoona's six hits in the game while Starling Marte and Sanchez had the others.

After an off day on Monday, Altoona (34-35) ventures up to the Northeast to take on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A Affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. from Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester, N.H. RHP Mike Colla (4-2, 3.54) will make the start for the Curve on Tuesday while RHP Henderson Alvarez (3-2, 2.75) gets the ball for the 'Cats in the series opener.

Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
