New York Boulders News Release

(Ramapo, N.Y.) - The Rockland Boulders were handed their second consecutive defeat by the Quebec Capitales losing 10-4. Rockland (24-19) got off to a rocky start considering the Capitales (22-22) scored seven runs in the first two innings. It didn't help that the Boulders had some crucial errors behind new Boulders starter Joe Donino.

Making his Boulders debut tonight, also fresh out of graduating Columbia University, Donino (0-1) got off to a rough start when Quebec put up a five spot in the first inning. After getting Sebastien Boucher to ground out to start his career, everything else seemed to work against Donino. A dropped third strike on next batter Mike Provencher was the beginning of a Quebec rally. A walk to Tim Smith and a crucial error by Boulders left fielder Joe Maloney plated Provencher with the game's first run. Unfortunately, Jonathan Malo took advantage of this opportunity by hitting his fourth home run of the year, a three run shot giving the Capitales a quick 4-0 lead. They would tally one more on an RBI single by Jean Blaquiere, completing a stunning five run inning.

The second inning wasn't much better for Donino. A one out double put Balbino Fuenmayor on second base setting up another potential rally. Donino bounced back by getting Asif Shah to line out to short, but was then hurt by an error on Junior Arrojo, keeping the inning alive. Yet again, the Capitales took advantage of extra opportunities by scoring two more runs on a double by Matt Helms. After only two innings, the Boulders found themselves in a 7-0 hole.

Rockland tried to mount a comeback in the later innings, starting with a two run seventh inning. Back to back RBI singles by Matt Nandin and Antone DeJesus made it a 8-2 ballgame and gave the Boulders a little bit of momentum. Charlie Law pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the seventh, his second consecutive scoreless inning. That was followed by a two run eighth inning, highlighted by a two run bomb from Joe Maloney (10), who continued his hot hitting after receiving Can-Am Player of the Week honors.

In the end though, Quebec managed to hang on. After tacking on two more runs in the 8th, the Capitales sealed a 10-4 win in the 9th. Overall, Capitales pitcher Shawn Sanford proved to be too much for the Boulders Batters. Sanford's (6-1) final line included seven innings pitched, eight strikeouts, and only two runs allowed. Donino settled down after two rough innings, but it was too much to overcome. His final line resulted in five innings pitched, seven hits, eight runs, three walks, and two strikeouts. Both Mike Nidiffer and Junior Arrojo had two hit games for the Boulders, while Joe Maloney picked up two RBIs on his tenth home run.

The Boulders will look to avoid the sweep on Thursday, July 10th, as they play the Capitales at 7:05 PM. The Boulders also return home for a three game set against the Trois Rivieres Aigles starting on Friday, July 12th at 7:05 PM with 80s night. Also, with the New Jersey Jackals losing 5-2 to the Aigles, the Boulders will remain a half game out of first and stay in second place in the Can-Am league.
