Both Games Go Extras, I-Cubs and Dodgers Split Twinbill
June 27, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Iowa Cubs (37-39) and the Oklahoma City Dodgers (42-35) split a twinbill, Monday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark with the Dodgers taking game one 10-9 in nine innings and the I-Cubs winning the second contest 3-2 in eight. The night was highlighted by four Iowa homers, including a game one blast from Daniel Vogelbach - his third in as many games - and a two-run blast by Tommy La Stella in the first game of his major league rehab assignment with Iowa.
A combined 29 hits in game one forced nine innings in the scheduled seven-inning contest. The Dodgers jumped on Iowa starter Pierce Johnson early, taking a 5-1 lead after two with the help of a three-run homer from O'Koyea Dickson.
The two teams traded runs through the next five frames until Iowa came down to its final three outs, trailing 9-6. The I-Cubs refused to go quietly as a wild pitch and a two-RBI double from Vogelbach locked the game and ultimately, forced extras. Oklahoma City got the final word as a bases-loaded single from Micah Johnson gave the Dodgers a walk-off win in the ninth.
La Stella played five frames and finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Vogelbach added a double and a long ball, as Juan Perez collected a home run of his own.
After a slugfest in game one, Iowa was limited to eight hits with a single extra-base knock - a homer from Mark Zagunis - in game two. Iowa took a 2-1 lead into the seventh, but a RBI single from Dickson locked the game and forced extras once again.
Iowa was quick to respond, taking advantage of a one-out walk served to John Andreoli in the eighth. The I-Cubs loaded the bases and Munenori Kawasaki came through with a sacrifice fly to boost the visitors to a 3-2 lead. Corey Black shut down the Dodgers' hopes of a second comeback and earned his second save of the season with Iowa.
Jake Buchanan (7-2) threw seven innings and took the win as he allowed two runs and struck out eight. Logan Watkins, Zagunis and Vogelbach each tabbed multi-hit games.
Iowa and Oklahoma City wrap up the series with an 11:05 a.m. CT game, Tuesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Follow the action on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
