Brockton Rox News Release

(Brockton, Mass) - The Brockton Rox (9-7) dropped their third straight game on a cold and rainy Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium, as the Newark Bears (11-5) claimed a 2-1 victory in twelve innings.

With one out in the twelfth, Todd Gossage launched a solo home run to right field off Colin Lynch (0-2) that ended up being the difference in a game that was dominated by pitching.

Robert Bono started the affair for the Rox and overmatched the Bears lineup through the first seven frames, allowing one unearned run on two hits while walking one and striking out six. Bono was perfect through five innings, until Eric McGee reached on an error by short stop Dominic Ramos to lead off the sixth.

Newark took a 1-0 lead later in the inning on an RBI single from Paddy Matera.

After six scoreless innings of work by Bears starter Jesse Estrada, the Rox answered back in the seventh, tying the game on Ryan Royster's lead off home run, his fifth in as many games.

The score would stay knotted 1-1 until the twelfth despite prime scoring opportunities for both sides. The Bears left the bases loaded in the ninth, followed by Brockton stranding three in the tenth, as the teams combined to strand 22 runners in the game. The Rox went on to leave the tying run at third with runners on the corners in the final frame.

Bears newcomer Chris Rollins (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pickup the win, while Mikey Mehlich notched his second save of the series.

The Rox will look to lefty Mark Rosen in Sunday's 1:05 p.m. contest to avoid the sweep. Brockton will wear special red jerseys in honor of Strike Out Hemophilia Day to be auctioned off after the game.
