Ward, Raines, Jr., Watson Blast Through Brockton Rox

June 11, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) - Newark Bears News Release

BROCKTON, MA. - Former major leaguers Daryle Ward belted a three-run homer, Tim Raines, Jr. added a two-run shot and Brandon Watson hit a solo shot, leading the Newark Bears to a 6-4 victory over the Brockton Rox Friday night at Campanelli Stadium.

The win was the eighth in their last nine games for the torrid Bears (10-5), who have continued their winning ways on the road after winning six straight at home. The Bears are still ½ game out of first place in the Can-Am League, trailing Quebec, and dropped Brockton a game behind Newark in the Can-Am standings at 9-6.

Trailing 1-0, the Bears took a 3-1 lead on a three-run homer from Ward, his second round tripper of the year, in the top of the third inning. Brockton tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the home fourth, but the Bears countered in the top of the fifth, getting a two-run blast from Raines, Jr., who now leads the Can-Am League in homers with five and RBI with 20.

The Bears received one more insurance run in the top of the ninth when Watson hit a solo homer, his first of the season.

The home run barrage aided Bears starting pitcher Alex Smith, who scattered five hits and three runs over six innings to gain his second win without a loss. Kyle Morrison and Anthony Pluta each pitched one inning of relief and Mikey Mehlich pitched a scoreless ninth to gain his third save.

Watson was the lone Bears player to have more than one hit. Watson went 2-for-5 in the win.

The Bears continue their road trip Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when they take on the Rox in the second game of their three-game series. Jesse Estrada is slated to make his fourth start of the season for the Bears.
