Lake Erie Crushers News Release
O'Fallon, Mo.-The Lake Erie Crushers fall in the first game of the series at TR Hughes Ballpark to the River City Rascals 1-0 on a walk-off home run in a game that took ten innings for a team to score because of great pitching performances on both sides.
With the loss, the Crushers (36-51) now have lost five of the seven games against the Rascals this season, and the Rascals (50-38) are 6-4 over their last ten games with the win.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the game. The Crushers biggest opportunity came in the fifth inning. Trevor Stevens led off the inning as he reached on an error by second baseman Hector Crespo. Emmanuel Quiles then singled to left field and Stevens tried to reach third base but the throw from left fielder Casey Rodrigue to third was in time for the out. Daniel Aldrich then singled to right and Quiles tried to go from first to third but was out as the throw from right field Jackson Slaid was cut off by the pitcher Lucas Laster and thrown to third to get Quiles. Cody Stevens then singled to move Aldrich to second but both were stranded on base.
In the sixth inning, Mark Fowler walked and moved to second on a single by Jose Barraza. Anderson Hidalgo hit another single that Fowler tried to score on but was out at the plate. The Crushers had runners on second and third with one out but could not get a run across.
The Rascals stranded runners on third base in the first, fourth and ninth innings but scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the tenth. With two outs and nobody on base, Taylor Ard belted his 26th home run to left field for the walk-off win.
The two teams combined for 17 hits and the Rascals left nine with the Crushers leaving eight on base.
Barraza and Quiles both went 2-4 as six hitters in the Crushers lineup reached base.
Todd Kibby started the game for the Crushers and went four innings, giving up four hits and striking out four. Mike Devine worked two scoreless innings after relieving Kibby. Kolby Moore, Matt Brankle and Ryan Richardson all pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Trevor Longfellow (5-9) struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the tenth but gave up the home run to Ard and took the loss.
Laster started the game for the Rascals and went 5 1/3 innings giving up seven hits and striking out three. Four Rascals came out of the bullpen giving up only one more hit the rest of the game, including Zeb Sneed (4-3) who pitched the top of the tenth to pick up the win.
The Crushers will play the second game of this series tomorrow at TR Hughes Ballpark. The Crushers will put right hander Brad Duffy (7-3, 3.39) on the mound and River City will counter with right hander Tim Koons (8-0, 3.32). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35.
