Greenville Drive News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - A night after Greenville couldn't get anything going offensively, they found their collective stroke at the plate Saturday. And then some. The Bombers set South Atlantic League single-game records for hits, doubles and total bases in a 22-4 pasting of the Savannah Sandgnats at Municipal Stadium.
Greenville's 29 hit effort broke a 41 year-old record set by Salisbury (NC) in 1961. Thirteen doubles and 51 total bases also set new league marks, while 16 extra-base hits tied the existing record.
Catcher John Otness and third baseman Andrew Pinckney led the charge with five hits and a home run each. Designated hitter Salvadore Paniagua went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a home run and five RBI. Pinckney finished with five RBI while Otness drove in three runs.
Greenville scored in every inning with the exception of the first and eighth. After Savannah scored two unearned runs in the first inning off winning pitcher Gary Galvez (5-1), the Bombers tallied one in the second on Brett LeVier's RBI double. The Bombers then went ahead for good with three runs in the third inning, two coming on a double by Logan Sorensen.
Galvez was tremendous in his spot start, allowing two unearned runs over a season-high seven innings. The righthander from Cuba yeilded four hits while issuing just one walk.
Savannah starter Ricardo Morales (4-5) did not survive the third inning in suffering the loss. No SandGnats pitcher worked more than two and two-third innings and all four hurlers gave up a minimum of four runs each.
The clubs meet in the finale of the three-game series on Sunday at 2:05pm. Righthanders Matt Goodson (5-4) for Greenville and Daryl Thompson (2-3) for Savannah will pitch.
