Rome Emperors News Release

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves received two great pitching performances from Matt Harrison and Cartersville native Will Startup and a solo home run off the bat of Clint Sammons to defeat the Columbus Catfish 2-1 Saturday evening. An enthusiastic and large crowd of 4,833 were on their feet in the top of the ninth and erupted when the left-hander Startup, a hometown favorite, struck out Brandon Carter swinging to end the game.

A scoreless tie was broken in the fourth inning when Rome got a one-out single from right-fielder Carl Loadenthal who went on to steal second base and score on a two-out single up the middle off the bat of JC Holt. The next half inning Columbus would answer right back with an RBI-double down the left-field line off the bat of left-fielder Ryan Carter.

The difference in the game came in Rome's half of the sixth inning when catcher Clint Sammons stepped up and deposited Brandon Weeden's pitch over the left-field wall into the Braves bullpen giving the Braves the lead which they would not relinquish on the night. Columbus would put a runner in scoring position in the eighth inning but Blake DeWitt's foul out to third basemen Van Pope ended the threat. Then in a nail biting ninth inning for Braves fans, the Catfish loaded the bases with two-outs before Startup retired the final batter of the game in dramatic fashion to record his first save on the year.

Matt Harrison picked up his seventh win on the year (7-3), which also tied him for second place in the South Atlantic League in wins. Brandon Weeden took the hard-fought loss (2-6). Tomorrow afternoon at 2 o clock the rubber game of the series will be played at State Mutual Stadium. Call the Braves ticket hotline at 378-5144 for ticket information.
