WINNIPEG, MB - Get ready for even more banjo-pickin' fun as CanWest, United Way and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers team-up to bring you the 4th Annual CanWest Banjo Bowl Weekend.
The three organizations announced today that this year's Banjo Bowl will be expanded to a three-day event beginning FRIDAY, SEPT. 7 and concluding with the SUNDAY, SEPT. 9 game between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders at 3 p.m. at Canad Inns Stadium.
One of the highlights of the weekend will be the Saturday, Sept. 8 Legends Brunch beginning at 11 a.m. in the Winnipeg Sun Centre at Canad Inns Stadium. The brunch will be an opportunity for football fans to mingle with past Blue Bomber and Roughrider greats. Tickets for the breakfast are $39.95 plus GST each and are available beginning SATURDAY, JULY 28 at Ticketmaster outlets or on-line at www.ticketmaster.ca.
Football fans will also have an opportunity to meet current Bomber greats like Milt Stegall, Charles Roberts, Kevin Glenn, Doug Brown and Barrin Simpson later that day when the football club hosts an autograph session in the south end of Canad Inns Stadium. The first 5,000 fans attending Saturday's Family Fun Day will receive a free team poster. Admission to Family Fun Day is free.
"The Banjo Bowl has been a hit with fans since its inception," said Bombers president and CEO Lyle Bauer. "By expanding it to a three-day event, we'll be able to provide football fans with even more fun and entertainment."
And what would a Banjo Bowl Weekend be without music? Live entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the south end zone featuring a number of local acts including the Waking Eyes. The musical highlight of the day will be a performance by Canadian rockers 54.40 (see attached bio) beginning at 9 p.m.
Tickets for this great evening of music are $20 each and are available to the general public beginning SATURDAY, JULY 28 through Ticketmaster. Season tickets holders will receive an early bird discount by purchasing tickets online at www.bluebombers.com through their account manager prior to Friday, Aug. 17. "We're excited about taking the next step and help create an entire football festival on the CanWest Banjo Bowl Weekend. The real exciting part is that not only will it be great for Blue Bombers, and yes Roughrider fans, but also a boost to the United Way."
The fun continues on Sunday when the archrival Blue Bombers and Roughriders hook-up for their annual post-Labour Day battle at 3 p.m. at Canad Inns Stadium.
The winning team in Sunday's game will receive $10,000 from CanWest for the United Way campaign in their home province.
"We're thrilled to be a part of the Banjo Bowl with CanWest and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers again this year," said Scott Sime, Director of Marketing and Communications for United Way Winnipeg. "Regardless of the outcome of the game, we're all winners because a community will be made stronger. Having said that... Go Bombers Go!!"
