Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB â The Winnipeg Blue Bombers got a little deeper today at a pivotal position with the signing of free agent quarterback Russ Michna.
Michna spent the 2004 season on the practice roster of the NFL's St. Louis Rams. The 6-1, 224-pound left-handed signal caller was signed by the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Western Illinois.
"We're getting a young quarterback who brings a lot of intangibles to his position," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman.
"He really gets the most out of his ability and he functions very well in a game setting."
Michna played in 39 games with the Illinois Leathernecks. He completed 418 of 733 passes for 6,434 yards (second most in team history) and 44 touchdowns (also second most in team history). He rushed for another 279 yards and eight TDs with the Leathernecks.
His collegiate career also included twice being named the Gateway Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He also received all-conference first-team honours and was an all-conference first-team All Academic.
Michna was a three-sport star in high school at Conant High in Hoffman Estates, Ill., lettering in football, basketball and baseball. He was the winning pitcher in the conference baseball championship game.
The Blue Bombers also announced today the release of QB Stanley Jackson.
