WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added a heaping help of quickness today with the signing of running back Marvin Townes.

Townes (6-0, 200, East Carolina '04, DOB: Nov. 9, 1980 in Warrenton, Miss.) compiled just the 12th 1,000-yard season in East Carolina history when he rushed for 1,128 yards in 2003 and scored 8 TDs. He also had 23 catches for 176 yards for the Pirates that season.

In four seasons with the Pirates (2001 to 2004), the speedy Townes rushed 447 times for 1,832 and 12 TDs. He was also an All-Conference USA kick returner.

His speed and shiftiness recently earned him a look from the New York Jets.

"He's extremely fast, lightning fast," said Blue Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman. "He's a very good player."

Townes was a standout off the field, too. He received a bachelor's degree in communications and was an honour roll student at ECU.

The Bombers also announced today the signing of linebacker Scott Mennie. The 6-1, 225-pound University of Manitoba Bisons product was the team's top pick (4th round, 30th overall) in this year's CFL College Draft.
