Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Jared Bolden shook off a first-base collision in the top of the ninth and delivered a bases-loaded single to snap a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the ninth to give the Myrtle Beach Pelicans a walk-off victory over the Frederick Keys at BB&T Coastal Field on Wednesday. The Birds will aim for a sweep tomorrow and now have a walk-off win against all seven Carolina League opponents.
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh-inning stretch, David Paisano led off the bottom of the seventh with his first home run of the season to cut the lead in half. Jonathan Roof doubled for his third hit of the game and Bolden drove him in with a single to tie the game against Keys reliever Randy Henry.
Those three keyed the ninth-inning rally as well. Paisano led off with a single against Henry (0-2), Hoying bunted him over and beat the throw to first for an infield single. Roof sacrificed the runners to second and third and Leury Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting up Bolden's heroics.
Bolden, in a 4-for-35 slump before his RBI single in the seventh, lofted a flare over the head of drawn-in shortstop Manny Machado for his second walk-off hit of the season. Bolden drilled the Birds' first game-ending home run of 2011 in a 13-inning win over Salem on July 16th.
In the field at first base, Bolden was trying to complete a potential inning-ending double play in the ninth, when third baseman Jonathan Roof's throw bounced and led Bolden to collide with runner Miguel Abreu. The contact bent Bolden's arm backward, but after a visit from manager Jason Wood and trainer Jeff Bodenhamer, he stayed in the game.
Zach Osborne (3-2) worked into and out of the bases-loaded jam in the ninth, inducing a groundout from Brian Ward to send the Birds into the home half of the ninth with the score still tied at five.
For the second straight night, Frederick got on the board in the top of the first. Jonathan Schoop doubled against Pelicans starter Justin Grimm and scored two batters later on Aaron Baker's RBI double. Baker doubled twice in the game and led the Keys with three hits.
Travis Adair gave Myrtle Beach the lead in the second with a two-run homer off of Keys lefty Nick Haughian. Adair tacked on another tally in the fourth with a single off the Frederick starter that plated Jared Prince.
The Keys came back in the middle innings with a run in the fifth to trim the lead to 3-2 and in the sixth, they threatened by putting two on with two out. Grimm was removed for Joe Ortiz to set up a favorable matchup with left-handed hitter Steve Bumbry. The move didn't work as Bumbry cracked an opposite-field three-run home run to give the Keys the lead.
The series concludes Wednesday night with a matchup of lefties as Chad Bell (2-0, 2.77) goes for the Pelicans against Jacob Pettit of the Keys (4-0, 1.30). First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
