Potomac Nationals News Release

(WOODBRIDGE, VA) Destin Hood homered twice but the Potomac Nationals offense was otherwise as the Nats lost their fifth straight to the Salem Red Sox, 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon. The Nationals allowed three first-inning runs and never recovered, mustering just seven hits on a day that starter Cameron Selik was chased in the second inning.

The first play of the game was a harbinger of things to come. Derrik Gibson hit a line drive to center field that scooted under the glove of Eury Perez for the first of two Potomac errors in the opening inning. Bryce Brentz then hit a fly ball to the warning track in right field for a double to score Gibson. Hood bobbled the ball on the track, allowing Kolbrin Vitek, who had singled with one out, to score. Miles Head then hit a ground ball to short that scored Brentz and put the Sox ahead 3-0.

Hood hit the first of his two homers in the first inning to pull the Nats back within two; it was a towering shot to left field and Hood's tenth homer.

The Sox scored a run in the second inning without a hit to chase Selik. With one out, Selik walked consecutive hitters and hit Gibson to load the bases and end his day. Mitchell Clegg allowed just one of three inherited runners to score and the Sox were ahead 4-1.

After another run in the top of the fourth pushed Salem in front by four, Hood struck again. With one out in the fourth, he smashed a towering homer to left that pulled Potomac back within a pair.

But the Sox put the game away with two runs in the sixth. Clegg retired the first two hitters of the frame, but the next four men reached base and two scored on consecutive RBI singles by Gibson and Peter Hissey.

The Nats scored single runs in the sixth and eighth innings; Brian Peacock hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth and grounded out to plate Jeff Kobernus in the eighth.

Stolmy Pimentel earned his second win of 2011 in 21 starts, both of which have come against the Nationals.

Potomac looks to salvage the series finale Wednesday night. Adam Olbrychowski takes the mound for the Nats at 7:05 P.M.
