Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

MUSKEGON, MI- It's been quite the week for Phil Boje. The Dubuque defenseman committed to Air Force on Thursday, and Friday he provided the Fighting Saints the game-winning goal in overtime, giving Dubuque a 3-2 win at the L.C. Walker Arena. Dubuque's powerplay was a perfect 3-for-3 on the evening, and Boje's blast came on the powerplay in overtime after Muskegon took a too many men penalty.

For the second straight Friday night, Dubuque dominated Muskegon through the early portions of the first period. However, this time around, it didn't matter on the scoreboard. Despite being outshot 17-6 in the first period, the Lumberjacks held a 2-1 lead.

Dubuque scored first on a Robby Darrar's third goal of the season. With Dubuque on its first powerplay of the game, the Fighting Saints struck on a mad scramble in front of Muskegon goaltender Jordan Uhelski. Dylan Gambrell and Jarrid Privitera attempted to tuck the puck in before Muskegon cleared it back to the left point right on the tape of Darrar. The Dubuque forward snapped a shot through traffic past Uhelski's blocker to make it 1-0 at 10:06.

The Lumberjacks would score on their first chance of the game to equalize the score. A shot from the left side hit a body in front, and bounced to Muskegon forward Cooper Marody. The Lumberjack wrapped the puck in front, and with Dubuque goaltender Christian Frey on the opposite side of the net, Marody gave it to teammate Steven Spinner who tapped in his first USHL goal to make it 1-1 at 14:32.

Muskegon would take the lead on Matt Iacopelli's 10th goal of the season. A bouncing puck eluded Dubuque defenseman Blake Hillman at center ice and sprung Muskegon on a two-on-one. Robbie DeMontis fired a pass to Iacopelli who one-timed it past Frey to make it 2-1 at 19:09.

The game saw no scoring in the second period, but the best series of chances went to Dubuque. Brett Boeing rang a shot off the inside of the goal post in the period's final minute, but lady luck kept Dubuque off the board.

In the third period, the Fighting Saints were able tie the game thanks to the powerplay. On the man advantage, the Fighting Saints fired a shot from the right side that bounced to Kavanagh in front of the goal. Uhelski stopped his first shot attempt, but the rebound sat loose in the crease, and Kavanagh jammed it home for his fourth goal of the season with 8:55 left in regulation.

The game headed to overtime where Muskegon made a critical mistake to put Dubuque on the powerplay. Early in the extra session, the Lumberjacks were whistled for having too many skaters on the ice. Dubuque didn't hesitate to make Muskegon pay. Off a faceoff win, Alexx Privitera worked the puck at the blueline and switched positions with Boje. Privitera fed Boje on the right point and he made no mistake with the one-timer, blasting a shot over Uhelski's glove to give Dubuque a win over Muskegon in overtime for the second straight Friday.

Muskegon was 0-for-2 in the game on the powerplay. Dubuque outshot Muskegon 36-29. Frey picked up the win in goal, kicking aside 27 shots, and improved to 7-0-0 on the season.

Tonight marked the return of Dubuque defenseman Dylan Chanter to the lineup. The contest was Chanter's first since sustaining a serious injury on October 12 at Cedar Rapids. Chanter fell to the ice following a fight and hit his head, which caused a seizure. Chanter sustained a concussion and was placed on the injured reserve. He returned to Dubuque's active roster Wednesday after around two weeks of practice. Chanter showed no fear in his return, and briefly dropped the gloves with Myles McGurty of the Lumberjacks in the third period. He received a double minor for roughing.

The Fighting Saints and Lumberjacks play again tomorrow night at 6:15 p.m. at the L.C. Walker Arena. The game will be broadcast on Super Hits 106.1 FM and online at superhits106.com.
