Boise Hawks News Release

The Boise Hawks (12-10) fell to the Eugene Emeralds (8-14) by a final score of 4-3 on Friday night. The Hawks got down early, but an inside-the-park home run for Cole Anderson in the 7th scored two and made it a 4-3 game. Boise had Willie Maciver on 2nd base to start the 9th on a double, but couldn't bring him home.

Eugene got things started in the first inning off Boise starter Nick Bush. The Emeralds got the leadoff man Fernando Kelli on first as he bunted for a hit down the first base line. Nico Hoerner came up and swung at the first pitch he saw for a single to right field. Kelli advanced to 3rd.

The Emeralds got Kelli in as Hoerner started to take second base on a steal but intentionally got caught in the run down and Kelli sprinted home, Hoerner went back to first. With Eugene leading 1-0, the Emeralds got a stolen base for Hoerner and then it was Christopher Morel with a single to score Hoerner with two outs and it gave Eugene a 2-0 lead.

Jonathan Sierra singled down the right field line after the Morel RBI and Morel advanced to 3rd base. With runners on the corners, it was an infield hit for Gustavo Polanco scoring Morel from 3rd to make it 3-0 Eugene.

The Emeralds got their last run of the 1st on a Tyler Durna single to right field scoring Sierra and Eugene quickly had the 4-0 lead.

Nick Bush winds up going four innings allowing four runs, on seven hits and striking out three picking up his first loss of the year.

Boise came back in the 4th and got on the board. After back-to-back singles for Danny Edgeworth and Daniel Jipping, Aubrey McCarty came up and blooped a single to get Boise a 4-1 lead.

Justin Valdespina gave the Hawks three inning of shutout baseball for his first outing as a Boise Hawk.

With the score 4-1 and two outs, Kennard McDowell had an infield hit to keep the 7th inning alive for Boise. Then, Cole Anderson hit a high fly ball off the centerfield fence and the baseball rolled back into the middle of center allowing Anderson to come all the way around for an inside-the-park home run to make it 4-3.

Shelby Lackey worked scoreless 8th and 9th frames for the Hawks and in the bottom of the 9th, Willie Maciver led the inning off with a double down the left field line. After Greg Jones struck out, Kennard McDowell put a charge into one that Eugene's centerfielder, Fernando Kelli, raced to the warning track and grabbed.

With two outs, Maciver on 2nd base, and Cole Anderson in the box, Maciver took third on a wild pitch. But Eugene's Carlos Vega, who picked up the win for the Emeralds, got Anderson to strikeout looking helping Eugene avoid the sweep.

Boise falls to 12-10, while Eugene goes to 8-14 on the season.

Boise hits the road for a three game road trip against the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. The Hawks will return home for a five-game series against the Vancouver Canadians starting on July 11th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
