Lake County Captains News Release

(Lakewood, NJ)--Lakewood BlueClaws lefty Josh Outman loves to pitch against the Lake County Captains. In three starts against the Captains this season, Outman is 2-0 with 31 of his 73 strikeouts.

On Friday night, Outman struck out a season-high 12 batters in 7 1/3 innings to once again confound the Captains in a 1-0 win at FirstEnergy Park.

The BlueClaws (36-31) posted their 11th shutout of the season which is tops in all of professional baseball, majors and minors. Three of those shutouts have come against the Captains.

The game's only run came in the first inning when lead-off hitter Julian Williams doubled off Captains starter Albert Vargas (4-9). Williams' grounder up the middle glanced off the glove of shortstop Chris De La Cruz and rolled into shallow center field. Williams hustled to second for a double.

Vargas balked Williams to third and the next hitter, Greg Golson, lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.

Outman (4-4) allowed only four hits and walked two. He left after giving up a hit to Nick Petrucci with one out in the eighth.

Lefty Mike Zagurski came on and walked back-to-back hitters to load the bases with two outs, but fanned Mike Conroy to end the Captains eighth.

Zagurski issued another walk with one out in the ninth. The BlueClaws then called on righthander Andy Barb, who walked Niuman Romero to place runners on first and second. Barb, however, got Matt Fornasiere to fly out to left, and Petrucci to pop to second to end the game.

Saturday's 14-strikeout performance by three BlueClaws pitchers wasn't the first impressive strikeout effort for Lakewood against the Captains. On May 24th, Outman fanned 11 Captains hitters at Classic Park. That night, the BlueClaws fanned 19 Captains hitters, which is the most ever against the Captains in one game.

Vargas worked six innings and allowed just the one run. He walked none and struck out three.

The Captains (28-40) have been shut out six times this season.

In the second game of the series Saturday night at 7:05, RHP Jeff Stevens will make his first Captains start against Lakewood's LHP Zach Cline.
