Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah's newest member, Reggie Fitzpatrick, drove in six runs and Edgardo Baez had four hits to lead the Sand Gnats to a 9-0 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats combined for sixteen hits in the contest, tying the team's season high.
All-Star Gene Yost complemented his offense's production with a masterful performance on the mound, throwing six innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits while fanning a season high six batters. Gnats relievers Brett Reid and Bryan Lambert, Jr. combined for three perfect innings out of the bullpen to preserve Savannah's fifth shutout this season.
The Sand Gnats wasted no time in getting to Charleston's Bryan Villalona when Francisco Plasencia led off the bottom of the first with a single into left and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ofilio Castro. Next Baez delivered a single into right-center to score Plasencia.
Savannah got a big inning in the second as Scott Schade dropped a double into left-center to bring in Dee Brown. Fitzpatrick followed, taking Villalona deep to right to give the Gnats a 4-0 lead.
Fitzpatrick was transferred to Savannah from Potomac before Friday's game and is currently serving his fourth tour of duty with the Gnats.
The Gnats put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth when Baez put a leadoff double into center. Savannah then loaded the bases when Brian Peacock was hit by a pitch and Leonard Davis followed with a single. A sacrifice fly from Dee Brown and an RBI double from Schade made the game a 7-0 affair, and Fitzpatrick's single into center made it 9-0.
Fitzgerald's four RBI tied his career high as a Sand Gnat, which he set on July 6, 2004. Four RBI also ties the mark for most RBI by a Gnat this season, previously set by Castro on April 9. The Gnats and RiverDogs are next in action Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander David Trahan will start for Savannah while Charleston will counter with right-hander Erick Abreu. Saturday is a Guaranteed Giveaway night, presented by Jeep, with Historic Grayson Stadium replicas going to the first 1,000 fans.
