Vermont Mountaineers News Release
HOLYOKE, Mass.- The Valley Blue Sox came from behind on Thursday evening to beat the Vermont Mountaineers 5-3 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
Valley fell behind early, but scored runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to top the Mountaineers.
Mountaineers starter Joe Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J./Manhattan) pitched well, and didn't allow a hit through his first three innings of work. Rocchietti went five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits. The righty didn't walk anyone and struck out three batters.
Erik Ostberg (Florence, Mass./U of Hartford) got the Blue Sox's offense going in the fourth inning with an RBI single, driving in Hezekiah Randolph (Baton Rouge, La./U of New Orleans). Valley then took the lead the next frame when Kyle Mottice (Canal Fulton, Ohio/U of Cincinnati) ripped a two-run double, scoring Kipp Moore (Waddy, Ky./Murray St. College) and CJ Stubbs (Del Mar, Calif./U of Southern California).
Mark Grunberg (Hagerstown, Md. /Towson) gave the Sox an insurance run in the sixth when he hit an RBI single, allowing Randolph to score.
Randolph's big day continued the next inning, when he drove in Mottice with an RBI double. That capped Valley's scoring in the game, and it was all they would need from their bats.
Blue Sox starter Travis Booth (Chino Hillas, Calif./California Baptist) allowed two runs on three hits over four innings of work. Booth walked two batters and struck out three.
Vermont's offense scored a pair of runs in the third inning, but then went quiet until the eighth.
Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood) hit an RBI single, scoring Ryan Fineman (Westlake Village Calif./Indiana) with one out in the third inning. The next batter, Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield), was issued a bases-loaded walk, scoring Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri) from third base.
The Mountaineers got one more run in the eighth inning thanks to an RBI groundout by Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion), which scored Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall). That was all the Mountaineers could get from their bats.
Reliever Luke Crabb (Independence, Mo./Virginia Commonwealth) got the win for Valley after pitching three shutout innings, and allowing just two hits. Sam Donko (Cortland, Ohio/Virginia Commonwealth) pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing a hit and striking out two batters, earning him the save.
Rocchietti suffered the loss for the Mountaineers, moving him to 0-3 on the season.
Vermont falls to 17-22. The Mountaineers will be in action again on Friday when they'll travel to Laconia, N.H. to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM at Robbie Mills Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
