Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls let one through their fingers as Plymouth Pilgrims' Cole Gordon connected for a solo home run in the top of the ninth and secured the 6-5 win for the Pilgrims over the Gulls at Cardines Field on Wednesday Night.
Stephen Scott continued to swing a hot bat at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a single and a game tying two-run home run in the sixth inning. Troy Dixon increased his team-leading batting average after going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and two runs scored.
Newport held strong as they entered the home half of the sixth inning. Continuing to trail the Pilgrims 3-1, the Gulls sent their two best hitters to the plate. Dixon, leading the Gulls with a .380 batting average, singled with two outs for his first hit of the night to extend the inning and allow Scott an at-bat. The Gulls most consistent hitter, Scott came through as he has done all season long, as he smashed his 10th home run of the summer and tied the game at 3-3.
Newport rallied in the seventh inning to take the lead, breaking the 3-3 game. Connor Kaiser hustled out an infield single to the hole in shortstop and later stole third base, putting himself in scoring position. While Travis Young has struggled all season, batting .142 prior to tonight's game, he recorded a go-ahead hit and scored Kaiser as the Gulls took a 4-3 lead over the Pilgrims.
Gulls pitching continued to keep the Pilgrims from scoring in the later innings behind the arms of Paul Campbell and Matthew Murphy. Campbell pitched two innings in relief and gave up only one hit and struck out two batters, providing the Gulls the opportunity to stay close.
The Pilgrims rallied in the eighth to regain a 5-4 lead on Newport. Brian Sharp (3-for-4) muscled his third double of the game and finished with three doubles and three runs scored. Cameron Hanley logged his second base hit, a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring Sharp and Liam O'Regan.
The Gulls wasted no time fighting back to even up with the Pilgrims. A lead-off single by Dixon, followed up by a walk to Scott, gave Trey Harris the opportunity to produce late-inning heroics. Harris sent a deep single off the center-field fence, driving in Dixon from first base and tying the game at 5-5.
After striking out three times in the game, Cole Gordon ended his hitless game with power. With what turned out to be the game winning home run to right field, the Pilgrims closed out the Gulls for the 6-5 win. Newport is next in action on Friday night vs. the division-leading Mystic Schooners at 6:35 p.m. at Cardines.
