Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Wilmington Blue Rocks roared out to a big lead early and rumbled past the Carolina Mudcats squad 8-1 on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (13-12) committed a season-high five errors that lead to five unearned runs. The Blue Rocks (12-14) claimed back-to-back victories for the first time since April 11-12.
Shawn Morimando (3-1) took the brunt of the Blue Rocks quick start. The lefty surrendered eight runs on five hits over just 3.2 innings. With three errors committed behind him, only three of the runs against Morimando were earned.
Christian Binford (2-1) was stellar in the win for Wilmington. The right-hander faced the minimum through four innings and finished after seven, scattering three hits and striking out seven.
The Blue Rocks scored the opening volley for the third straight night when Bubba Starling soared a high fastball off the scoreboard beyond left field. Raul A. Mondesi scored ahead of him on the home run for a 2-0 lead.
Wilmington added a run in the third when Terrance Gore was safe at first on a fielding error. An errant pickoff throw advanced Gore to third and the speedster scored on a double by Mondesi for a 3-0 lead.
Things unraveled for the Mudcats in the fifth inning when the Blue Rocks scored three on an error. After loading the bases on a walk, single and controversial safe call at third base on a force play, Wilmington's Mondesi bounced a grounder to third. James Roberts' throw sailed down the right field line to score all three runners. A two-run single by Johermyn Chavez capped the inning and the Rocks led 8-0.
Torsten Boss broke up the shutout in the last of the ninth when he belted his first home run of the year, a towering fly over the right field wall.
The five errors were the most committed by the Mudcats in a single game since making five miscues on July 6, 2012. The Mudcats and Potomac Nationals are the only two Carolina League teams to score in every game they have played this season.
The Mudcats need a win on Sunday afternoon to salvage a split of the series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Kids Run the Bases presented by Amerigas will be held following the game, weather permitting. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Five County Stadium. Tickets are available by calling the box office at (919) 269-2287 or by logging on to carolinamudcats.com.
