Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Wilmington Blue Rocks scored twice in the seventh and held on for a 2-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The Blue Rocks (13-14) claimed just their second series in Zebulon by winning three-of-four. The Mudcats (13-13) have suffered three straight losses for the first time this season.
D.J. Brown (2-1) took the loss despite another strong outing. The right-hander tossed 6.2 innings for the Mudcats and allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits. Opponents have scored only five runs off Brown across 22.2 innings in his four starts.
Daniel Stumpf (1-4) looked impressive while picking up his first Carolina League win for Wilmington. The lefty hurled 6.2 innings, allowing one run, and scattered four hits. He struck out seven. Mark Peterson got the final four outs to notch his sixth save.
An untimely error proved the Mudcats' undoing in the finale. After Brown and Stumpf held the offenses scoreless through six innings, the Blue Rocks put runners at the corners for Kenny Diekroeger with one away. The second baseman attempted a safety squeeze bunt, but the ball bounced in front of the plate. Catcher Jeremy Lucas grabbed the hop and tagged out a charging Daniel Rockett for the second out.
Terrance Gore followed Diekroeger and reached safely after a pitch grazed him on the arm. Grant Sides took over for Brown with the bases loaded. Jack Lopez chopped a slow bounder up the middle towards shortstop Yhoxian Medina. With Gore bearing down on second, Medina opted a try to first. The throw bounced past first baseman Jerrud Sabourin, allowing two runs to score.
The Mudcats responded in their half of the seventh. With two out, Anthony Gallas singled and Sabourin drew a walk. Against reliever Glenn Sparkman, Alex Monsalve fought off several pitches before driving a fastball off the high wall in left. Gallas scored easily, but Sabourin was thrown out at home to end the inning.
Trailing 2-1, the Mudcats put the tying run into scoring position in the eighth and ninth, but the Blue Rocks managed an escape both times to preserve the win.
Carolina goes back on the road for the next seven games beginning with three at Calvin Falwell Field against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Game one of the series gets underway at 6:05 p.m. on Monday night.
The Mudcats return home to host the Hillcats and the Salem Red Sox on May 12. The seven-game homestand features Dollar Dog Night, Thirsty Day, Fireworks Friday and Kids Run the Bases presented by Amerigas.
