Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (MAY 4, 2014) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, were handed a 6-1 defeat by the Frederick Keys on Sunday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Keys starter Matt Taylor fired seven scoreless innings, beating the Pelicans Sam Wolff in the series finale.

The Pelicans (17-11) dodged trouble in the first and second innings, but Frederick (12-15), got to the right-handed starter Wolff in the third inning. With one out, the Keys collected three straight hits to plate two runs. With Glynn Davis in scoring position, Lucas Herbst opened the scoring with a line drive double to left field, and Zane Chavez followed with a single to center field to score Herbst. The Keys led 2-0 after three innings.

Taylor kept the Pelicans bats off-balance throughout the night. He faced just one over the minimum through the first three innings and allowed only five baserunners in total in his seven innings. The Pelicans got no more than one baserunner in any single inning off of Taylor who surrendered three hits, a couple walks, and fanned three.

Wolff settled in after the scoring in the second. He set down nine in a row between the end of the third and the beginning of the sixth. He kept the Keys hitless between the third and the seventh innings, when Frederick added another two runs on a single from Lucas Herbst following a single and a walk. Wolff was done after seven innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits, and four walks. He added four strikeouts.

Creede Simpson clubbed a one-out home run to left off of Pelicans reliever Cody Ege in the eighth to extend the lead to 5-0. The Keys added another off of Ege in the ninth on two walks and a single. Ege had allowed just two earned runs in his previous 12 innings but gave up two earned runs in two frames on Sunday.

Myrtle Beach threatened in the ninth off of reliever Lex Rutledge. Preston Beck went hitless on Sunday, snapping an eight-game hitting streak, which was tied for the team's best this season. He began the ninth, however, by working a six-pitch work. Joey Gallo lined a single to right field next. After a groundout and a strikeout, the Pelicans loaded the bases when David Lyon was plunked by an 0-1 offering from Rutledge. With the bases loaded, Zach Cone singled to left, scoring the Pelicans' first rum. Cone was hitless at home before Sunday. He went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, and an RBI. Luis Mendez, the newest Pelicans position player stepped in. Mendez grounded out to third base to end the ballgame, as the Pelicans dropped the series finale 6-1.

Wolff (3-3) suffered the defeat. He has picked up a decision in each of his six starts. Taylor (3-1) earned his team-leading third win.

With the homestand complete, the Pelicans hit the road for seven games. They begin a three-game series in Winston-Salem Monday night against the Dash. First pitch from BB&T Ballpark is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Andrew Faulkner (1-0, 1.88 ERA) makes his fourth start in the series opener. The Dash have yet to announce their starter. The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show beginning at 6:40 p.m.
