Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (35-35, 27-32) snapped their four game losing streak with a 6-0 shutout of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (35-35, 32-27), Carolina League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Starter Clay Buchholz struck out a career high 10 batters for the win and Jed Lowrie collected two RBIs as Wilmington won the first and last game of its six game home stand.
Buchholz (2-0) was perfect through 4.1 innings retiring the first 13 batters in a row, seven on strikeouts. Steve Pyzik broke up the perfect game with a single up the middle, one of only two hits off Buchholz. The 22-year-old right-hander worked six innings, also a career high, and did not walk a single batter.
Wilmington plated one run in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead giving Buchholz and the Rocks pitching staff all the run support they needed. Jeff Corsaletti led off the frame with a double then moved up to third on a ground out. Lowrie followed up with an RBI sac-fly to right field scoring Corsaletti.
Justin Sturge worked two innings in relief of Buchholz allowing just two hits and striking out two. Mike James pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout as the Wilmington pitching staff struck out 12 batters and did not walk one.
Wilmington plated two more runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back, two-out RBI bases loaded walks to Jeff Natale and Lowrie for a 3-0 lead.
Catcher John Otness increased the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single in the seventh inning scoring Corsaletti.
The Blue Rocks capped off their scoring in the eighth inning with two more runs for a 6-0 lead. Iggy Suarez scored the first run on an RBI single from Bryan Pritz after Suarez doubled then moved up to third on a wild pitch. Corsaletti followed with a walk then with two outs Lowrie hit a sharp grounder that second baseman J.C. Holt couldn't handle and Pritz scored on the fielding error.
