Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - On Thursday night the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (32-27, 67-62) had designs on a three-game sweep of the Wilmington Blue Rocks (27-32, 62-67), but the Rocks had other plans. Wilmington avoided the sweep and shut out the Pelicans, 6-0, in the series finale. The Pelicans were only able to produce four hits in the shut out loss with two of them coming off the bat of 1B Steve Pyzik. 2B J.C. Holt went 0-4 and saw his hitting streak come to a halt after he had collected at least one hit in 20-straight games, a Pelicans record.
Wilmington put a smile on the faces of the hometown faithful when they struck for a run in the bottom of the 1st inning. After a lead-off double courtesy of LF Jeff Corsaletti and a ground out to short, which allowed Corsaletti to third, SS Jed Lowrie drove in the first run of the night on a sacrifice fly ball to right field.
In the bottom of the 4th the Blue Rocks tacked on a pair of runs when Pelicans starting pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes issued two bases loaded walks, one to 2B Jeff Natale and the other to Lowrie, which made the score 3-0 in favor of the Boston Red Sox farmhands.
With the Pelicans unable to get their offense going the Blue Rocks went on to plate three more runs late in the game to seal the deal. The Rocks scored a run in the bottom of the 7th on an RBI single up the middle from C John Otness, which brought Lowrie across the dish after the Blue Rocks shortstop led the frame off with a double. The final two runs of the evening came across in the bottom of the 8th inning highlighted by an RBI base hit to centerfield off the lumber of CF Bryan Pritz.
Reyes (L, 3-3) pitched well put didn't receive any run support and took the loss. The big lefty from Riverside, California allowed three runs on six hits, struck out two and walked three in five innings. Reliever Ralph Roberts gave up three runs on four hits in three innings out of the pen. Blue Rocks starter Clay Buchholz (W, 2-0) spun six shut out innings in which he yielded a pair of hits and fanned 10 to earn the victory.
Pyzik, who went 2-3, accounted for half of the hits for Myrtle Beach on the night. The other two hits were notched by RF Robert Marcial who finished the evening 1-3, while LF Ovandy Suero went 1-3 and stole a base.
On Friday night the Pelicans travel to Frederick, Maryland where they will take on the Frederick Keys in game one of a four-game series starting at 7:00 pm. The Pelicans will return to Coastal Federal Field on Tuesday, August 29th when they play host to the Potomac Nationals at 7:02 pm, which will begin the final homestand of the 2006 season.
