Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - On Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (32-26, 67-61) did what they had to do early and then held on late in a 4-3 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks (26-32, 61-67). C Clint Sammons provided a clutch two-out, two-run double in the top of the 3rd inning to help the Pelicans take their second straight game against the Rocks in the three-game series. 2B J.C. Holt continued his sizzling hot ways at the plate and extended his hitting streak to 20 games, just two shy of tying Kinston's Brian Barton for the longest of the season in the Carolina League.
The Pelicans posted the first run of the night in the top of the opening frame thanks to an RBI single to right field off the bat of SS Diory Hernandez. The RBI base hit from Hernandez plated CF Carl Loadenthal, who drew a one-out walk and then proceeded to steal his 24th base of the season to get into scoring position.
Two innings later, in the top of the 3rd, the Birds extended their lead and it was Holt that got them started. Holt led the inning off with a double into left field and eventually came around to score on an RBI single to left ripped by 3B Van Pope. After Pope's single, Hernandez was hit-by-a-pitch, putting runners at first and second for Sammons who came through with his two-run double down the left field line. The double from Sammons gave the Pelicans a 4-0 advantage and capped off the scoring for the Pelicans on the evening.
Wilmington scored three unanswered runs over their final seven trips to the plate, but it wouldn't be enough as the Pelicans held on to win 4-3.
Pelicans starter Kelvin Villa (W, 8-6) earned the win with five solid innings of work against the Rocks. The All-Star lefty held the opposition to just two runs on five hits. Nick Tisone and Michael Nix (S, 7) spun a combined four innings of strong relief with Tisone allowing just one run on three hits and Nix tossing 1.2 no-hit innings to pick up the save. Blue Rocks starter Gary Galvez (L, 5-9) allowed four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits in six innings. Galvez was able to strike out eight Pelicans, but the Birds did just enough damage against him to hand him the loss.
The Pelicans were led at the plate by Sammons who went 3-4 with a pair of RBI's. Holt finished the night 2-5 with two doubles, while 1B Steve Pyzik added a multi-hit effort going 2-4.
On Thursday night the Pelicans and Blue Rocks square off in game three of the three-game series in Delaware at 7:05 pm. The Pelicans will return to Coastal Federal Field on Tuesday, August 29th when they play host to the Potomac Nationals at 7:02 pm, which will begin the final homestand of the 2006 season.
