Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
KARNING KNIFE: Nathan Karns (2-2) set career-high marks with eight innings pitched and 11 strikeouts, allowing just two hits in that time as the Potomac Nationals bested the Wilmington Blue Rocks in Sunday's series opener, 7-1. The hard-throwing right-hander retired 20 of the last 22 he faced.
COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE: Potomac fell a run short of its cumulative total from the previous five meetings with the Blue Rocks combined. It did so despite a 3-for-16 (.188) performance with runners in scoring position. The P-Nats' 12 men left on base matches the most stranded runners by any Wilmington foe in a game this season. It was only recently originally set in the second-half opener at Carolina on Thursday.
ROAD WOES: The Blue Crew has dropped 10 straight road games, one off the franchise record set from July 1-18, 1999. The team is on pace to lose 46 affairs away from Frawley Stadium. The franchise record is 43, set by the 60-80 team in 2005 and matched by last year's squad.
DOWNARD SPIRAL: With seven straight setbacks overall, this year's unit is also on pace to go 55-85 and break the 2005 team's record for losses in a season. That is the equivalent of a Major League team going 64-98.
QUINCEA=D1ERA: The Blue Rocks have just one win since a June 5 defeat of Carolina, 5-2. The Mudcats returned the favor by the same score the next day. That marked the first of 15 losses among the Rocks' last 16 games.
UNDER THE SEA: With the losses, the Blue Rocks dropped to a season-worst 16 games under .500. They have not been this far below sea level since 2005.
NORTHERN EXPOSURE: This series marks the start of divisional foes only for Wilmington over a stretch of 13 straight and 17 of 20. The Rocks are 17-34 against Southern Division squads and 12-11 against their brothers in the North.
SECOND-HALF SWOON: Through four games to start the second half, Blue Crew pitching has allowed an average of 7.3 runs per game. That includes a pair of seven-inning affairs. Due to eight errors in that time, all over the last three games, the ERA sits at 6.59 on the stanza.
ROSTER MOVE: Yesterday, with a bullpen game taxing three relievers, Wilmington's roster expanded to 11 active pitchers. Right-hander Matt Ridings joined the club from Low-A Kane County. A 41st-round pick out of Western Kentucky University in 2010, Ridings ranked among the Rookie Appy League's top 10 in IP (66.2), strikeouts (60) and ERA (3.92) as a full-time starter with 14 nods at Burlington last year. The former collegiate All-American led Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, TN to a state runner-up finish in his prep days. He exclusively relieved with the Cougars, going 4-3 with two saves and a 2.43 ERA over 21 appearances. In 37.0 innings, Ridings whiffed 39 while walking a slim six. He did not allow a home run and the league hit .232 against him.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE: Karns' 11 strikeouts matches the most by any Wilmington foe in a single outing this season...Myrtle Beach's Kyle Hendricks turned the same trick on May 20 at Wilmington...The Blue Rocks won that game in the bottom of the ninth, 2-1...In two fill-in starts, Chase Boruff is 0-1 with a 12.71 ERA and .346 batting average against...After Jose Bonilla's infield single in the second inning, the Blue Rocks failed to put a man beyond second base...In fact, of the three men who reached base over that time, just one, Angel Franco on a leadoff double, got beyond first.
