Heidenreich Delivers Complete Game Shutout
June 25, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (June 24, 2012) - Matt Heidenreich went the distance Monday night in an 8-0 win over Salem. Heidenreich turned in his second complete game of the season, scattering four hits and not allowing a runner to reach second base.
Both of Heidenreich's complete games this season have been more than seven innings. Heidenreich (7-2) is one of only two pitchers in the Carolina League to have a complete game of more than seven innings. He carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before allowing a single to Xander Bogaerts. He induced a double play to the next batter and exited the fifth having faced the minimum amount of hitters.
The leadoff man in the sixth reached for Salem but Heidenreich again forced the next batter to hit into a double play to end the inning. Heidenreich finished the night throwing 98 pitches and facing only 29 batters, two more than the minimum.
A pair of three-run home runs energized the Dash offense early in the game. Trayce Thompson blasted his 14th home run to the outer limits of BB&T Ballpark's left field in the first inning for a 4-0 lead. Thompson's home run ties him for the league lead. Brady Shoemaker kept pace with his 13th of the year in the second inning to push the Winston-Salem advantage to 7-0.
The Dash wasted no time getting on the board a night after being kept out of the run column. Marcus Semien doubled to start the game and came home on a Shoemaker double. After a Dan Black single, Thompson cleared the bases with his home run.
Winston-Salem (2-3, 46-28-1) began its second inning rally with two-outs. Carlos Sanchez singled Semien to third before Shoemaker's three-run home run. Shoemaker finished the night 3-for-5 with four RBI to push his league-leading total to 59.
In the eighth inning, consecutive singles by Mike Blanke and Michael Earley set the stage for Juan Silverio to drive in Blanke for the final tally of the night. All nine batters in the Dash lineup recorded at least one hit as Winston-Salem piled up 14 on the night.
Salem (1-4, 42-32-1) starter Miguel Celestino had the shortest start of his career, giving up seven runs on seven hits in just two innings of work. On offense the Red Sox recorded four hits, all singles, and did not have a runner reach second base.
The Dash look to grab the series lead Tuesday night in game three of a four-game set. Right-hander Steve McCray (2-0, 2.72 ERA) takes the mound for Winston-Salem. Salem's starting pitcher is still to be determined. First pitch is set for 7:00.
