Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, announced Monday that goaltender Joonas Korpisalo was assigned to Cleveland by the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets. A 6'3", 190 lb. native of Pori, Finland, Korpisalo, 22, suffered a groin injury while playing for Columbus in a preseason game vs. the Nashville Predators on October 4th and was activated Monday off the Blue Jackets' Injured Non-Roster list prior to his assignment to Cleveland.
Originally drafted by Columbus in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (62nd overall), Korpisalo posted a 16-11-4 record with a 2.60 goals-against average (GAA) and .920 save percentage (S%) in 31 career NHL appearances for Columbus, all coming during the 2015-16 campaign. Korpisalo went 8-8-2 in 18 regular-season appearances for the Monsters last year with a 2.36 GAA and a .913 S% before posting a record of 6-2 with a 2.96 GAA in nine postseason appearances for Cleveland, helping the team claim the 2016 Calder Cup Championship.
In 21 career AHL appearances for the Springfield Falcons and the Monsters, Korpisalo notched a record of 8-10-2 with a 2.48 GAA and a .908 S% spanning parts of two seasons from 2014-16. Prior to his North American professional career, Korpisalo posted a record of 14-13-7 with a 2.34 GAA and .919 S% in 38 Liiga appearances for Ilves Tampere in 2014-15 in his native Finland. The Monsters also announced Monday that defenseman Keith Aulie was released from his professional tryout contract with the club.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Thursday road clash vs. the Manitoba Moose with full coverage, live from MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB, underway at 8:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
